8 behinds or more in a match

Postby spell_check » Sat Jul 23, 2011 7:51 pm

There is plenty of fanfare for a player who kicks 10 goals in a match. It's a rare commodity in this era of defensive football. But what about 10 behinds in a match? It has not been done at least since 1991; and I only know of four occasions ever!:

Score, Player, Team, Opponent, Round, Year, Venue
6.11 Michael Graham Sturt vs Woodville 15 1975 Unley
3.10 Alby Wundersitz Sturt vs South 5 1935 Adelaide
5.10 Ken Farmer North vs Torrens 14 1935 Thebarton - credit baggy8
2.10 Graham Molloy Norwood vs Woodville 2 1967 Norwood - credit to AH for this
3.10 Michael Graham Sturt vs South 14 1980 Unley
7.10 Malcolm Blight Woodville vs Central 2 1985 Elizabeth

So, perhaps we may need to lower the bar a little. Since 1991, no one has scored more than eight behinds. And it's only been done six times now, with the latest addition from today:

1.8 Robert Handley Central vs Glenelg 14 1992 Adelaide
2.8 David Niemann Eagles vs Central 17 1992 Elizabeth
13.8 Grant Coffee Central vs Sturt 1 1993 Elizabeth
4.8 Daniel Schell Central vs West 17 2005 Richmond
5.8 Daniel Schell Central vs North 22 2005 Adelaide
6.8 Adam Grocke Eagles vs West 17 2011 Richmond

Prior to 1991, I have got handy at the moment the following for 8 and 9 behinds:
8.9 Jack Bottomley Torrens vs Sturt 1 1935 Thebarton
6.9 Alby Hollingworth Port vs Sturt 8 1937 Alberton
7.9 Bruce Schultz Norwood vs South 1 1939 Adelaide
9.9 Parker Morton Sturt vs Torrens 3 1939 Adelaide
10.9 Bruce Schultz Norwood vs Glenelg 5 1939 Norwood
11.9 Ken Farmer North vs West 17 1939 Adelaide
7.9 John Mehaffey Torrens vs South 10 1948 Thebarton
4.9 John Mehaffey Torrens vs South 6 1949 Adelaide
8.9 John Halbert Sturt vs Central 15 1964 Elizabeth - credit baggy8
1.9 Barry Hearl North vs Woodville 5 1972 Woodville - credit to rog
10.9 Scott Hodges Port vs Sturt 9 1990 Football Park
4.9 Malcolm Blight Woodville vs Torrens 8 1985 Thebarton
1.8 Merv Waite Torrens vs Norwood 12 1932 Thebarton
16.8 Ken Farmer North vs South 14 1933 Prospect - credit baggy8
6.8 Ken Farmer North vs Norwood 13 1934 Norwood
6.8 Ken Farmer North vs Sturt 4 1936 Prospect
5.8 Christopher Munro South vs Norwood 4 1936 Adelaide
8.8 Ken Farmer North vs West 14 1936 Prospect
7.9 Bruce Schultz Norwood vs North 3 1938 Prospect
12.8 Bruce Schultz Norwood vs West 5 1938 Norwood
2.8 Ron Brown Norwood vs Sturt 7 1938 Norwood
6.8 Ken Farmer North vs Torrens 14 1938 Thebarton
8.8 Ken Farmer North vs West 7 1939 Prospect
3.8 Howard Abbott Port vs Torrens 8 1939 Adelaide
4.8 Ken Farmer North vs Norwood 15 1939 Norwood
4.8 Colin Churchett Glenelg vs Norwood 11 1951 Moonta
4.8 Max Mayo Norwood vs Glenelg 5 1953 Norwood
10.8 Peter Phipps West Glenelg 7 1957 Kensington
8.8 Geoff Kingston Torrens vs Sturt 6 1962 Adelaide
5.8 Geoff Kingston Torrens vs Glenelg 14 1963 Thebarton
0.8 Bob Shearman Sturt vs Norwood 5 1967 Norwood - credit AH
9.8 Ross Dillon Norwood vs North 21 1974 Norwood
2.8 Neil Craig Norwood vs Glenelg 10 1975 Norwood
1.8 Darrell Cahill Port vs North EF 1975 Football Park
9.8 Rick Davies Sturt vs North 9 1983 Unley
3.8 Peter Johnston Torrens vs West 4 1983 Richmond
2.8 Roger Luders West vs Torrens 22 1983 Richmond
5.8 Malcolm Blight Woodville vs Glenelg 6 1985 Glenelg
2.8 Russell Shields Central vs Woodville 20 1985 Adelaide

I can guarantee there are stacks more before 1991. I will update it at some point. But it goes to show you a couple of things:
-The accuracy of players (even the top goalkickers) is more accurate today
-The amount of ball forwards got in those days i.e. no three on ones
-Therefore, the scores were higher

Being pedantic, but I reckon Grocke only kicked 7 points. One the ABC counted was a marking attempt by Redden in the goal square, not really an opponent touching it on the line which might get counted.

I saw that one, while I wasn't exactly keeping track of the scores myself in the Budget, I didn't think that would be his - just a rushed behind. I actually thought he only got 4.6.

Graham Molloy kicked 2.10 v Woodville at Norwood Oval, 22 April 1967
Bob Shearman kicked 0.8 v Norwood at Norwood Oval, 13 May 1967

Certain about the Molloy one, 95% sure of the Shearman one.

The SANFL and Champion Data have also credited him with 8 behinds.

As per the Budget last week - Barry Hearl was moved to FF after Dennis Sachse was dropped to the ressies. Hearl kicked 1-9 and big Dennis kicked 11 in the ressies!
Piss weak SANFL and the CLOWNS who run it.

AH might be able to help here, but I have memories of Mike Coligan kicking 8.10 in a game at The Parade in about 1972. And spelly, I'd always thought (possibly incorrectly) that Blighty's feast on West Adelaide in 1985 reaped 14.0, 8.10 and 12.0.

Two definite additions I can make to the list are:-

Ken Farmer kicked 16.10 against South at Prospect in 1933 and 5.10 against Torrens at Thebarton in 1935.

Blight in 1985 got 14.0, 8.3 and 12.0 against West.

And, with that 16.10; I hope you don't mind, but I had a look for other occasions he kicked 10 or more (including that one) and saw that it was stated he kicked 16.8 - unless your source was correct, but I saw that here:

Thanks for that spelly. I know we're talikng about inaccuracy here, but Blighty's 34.3 for the three games against West is sensational.

My source for Farmer's 16.10 was The Farmer Files, which is based on records that Ken Farmer kept in his notebooks. So choose your source; who knows which is more likely to be right?

Ok, I thought that's where you got it from. With the 5.10; that sounds right, although I can only see he got the first two scoring shots as behinds, then 5 in a row in the 3rd quarter.

In the 114 matches I have found a goals and behinds tally for Farmer, they add up to 761.446 - accuracy of 63.05%

Just remembered that John Halbert kicked 8.9 (from CHF) for Sturt against Centrals at Elizabeth in 1964.

Not 10 behinds, but an even worse conversion rate of 0.7.
