Coaches sacked mid-season

Postby Pseudo » Tue Jun 21, 2011 9:51 pm

Copying the details from a discussion on the North v Glenelg thread on the main board
I've added some details from memory, cannot be arsed enough to check them properly.
Please amend or add details, or add to the list.

Mark Mickan (obviously)

Peter Simmons, 2005. Glenelg lost the next game.

Gary McIntosh 2004? (though he coached the season out). Norwood won the next game (the infamous 1.4 game) but Macca lost his eventual last game (also against Glenelg)

Don Scott.

Rick Davies. He ended up playing coach of South, and beat Sturt the first time they met.
(edit - scratch Rick Davies, thankyou sapaul)

Graham Campbell 1983, (reinstated 4 days later). IIRC Glenelg lost the next match.

Ken Sheldon was sacked in May 1996. South of course came out and thumped North the next weekend.

Darel Hart.

Players' revolt.

It might be documented in "Pride of the Bay".

He was sacked as a player and then ended up as playing coach of South. He coached Sturt in 1989 after he had coached South.

Ok... my bad. Remind me when it was, and who was Sturt coach at the time.

IIRC, you lost your first eight games.

Campbell sacked after a loss to Woodville?

Pretty sure the Bays first win for the year was a five-point thriller against Port...

nup, thrashed central by 50pts in round 9 and followed it up winning at alberton,

correct in that he was sacked after the home loss to woodville, reinstated we played south (coached by cornes) at adelaide oval, couldnt kick straight to save ourselves and south ran over the top of us in the 2nd half. it was bizarre to say the least, we couldnt buy a win in the first 8 weeks and were in most games at 3/4 time and when we finally broke the ice with the easy victory over cd our season seemed to turn around where it was roundly thought that we were only 2nd to the all conquering bloods during the 2nd half of the mnor round

It would be interesting to have the full list of mid-season sackings. My guess is that Mickan is the first one ever to be sacked while his team is in the five (or top 4 in the old days), but it would be good to know for sure.

I remember that game against Woodville, it was down at the Bay in 1983, Blighty had returned as coach of the Peckers, the weather was ordinary, big crowd anticipating a win by the Tigers, thing was Blighty carved us up along with a big fella who's name escapes me, so i remember driving home after the game thinking Glenelg were in for a long cold winter, very depressing.

Not so much a lad, he started with Swan Districts (1970-75) and then spent a few years at Fitzroy (1976-80) before ending up at Woodville (1981-85).
