Last gasp wins...your memorable games

Postby Jimmy » Fri May 13, 2011 10:57 pm

Anyone remember sturt vs the bays at glenelg, about 1998 or so. Bruce Lennon kicks a goal to win just before the siren after the bays played kick to kick to wind the clock down. seamus Maloney smothered a kick and hand balled to bruce who ran it in from behind the centre almost. Was behind the goals, classic win.

Anyone remember that or were there and what other similar games were you at?

Spelly, do you have stats from that game?

Simon Arnott kicking a goal as the final siren goes to give Centrals the lead for the first time of the day against the Eagles at Woodville in around 2002-2004!

Eagles were up by 6 goals at one stage iirc.

Also around the same time period Rick MacGowan kicked a late late goal to give the dogs the win against the Bays down at Glenelg. He kicked from the south east pocket, i was behind the goals and all the Central fans went up even though it missed by about half a meter. The goal umpire gave it.

One the Eagles were lucky to get away with was against South in 2006 at Woodville, where South came home with a wet sail and I think it was McKenna missed a snap from 25-30 with only secondes left.

Only real last-gasp I can remember the Eagles winning was the 1st semi on 2007, scores were tied and Dale Symons did well to keep the ball in play against his Glenelg opponent, soccered it to the goal face, where luckily Schwarze read it best, marked and goaled.

From a Port perspective the one I mainly remember is a loss against South - not sure if it was 83 or 84 - when Darren Harris kicked that long goal, not sure if it was just before the siren, or actually on the siren. That result really hurt.

Another game from the 80's that I recall was Port v West, not sure if it was 85 or perhaps 86. West were up by about 7 goals? at 3 qtr time, and Port came back and won.

The banana kick from Kym Dillon (playing for Torrens I think? - or was it North?) in mid 80's probably ranks as one of the more memorable endings in recent SANFL history.

Can't remember too many for my own side, perhaps a Tim McNeil goal to steal a game off South at Footy Park in 97'. There were other comebacks and late wins vs South at the Parade and the Bays at Footy Park in the 90's, but unfortunately I wasn't present to see them.

Sadly I've seen several go against us though, the Bays by virtue of a freakish Paul Weston performance at Footy Park in 82', the comeback from the Blues at the Parade in 83' and Brian Beinke's goal on the siren (that noone could hear) at the Parade in the earlyish 2000's

In the 80's at Albetron, West in front by nearly 5 goals entering time on and Port coming over the top to win. I was shattered. They kicked 5 goals in 6 minutes.

I remember that like it was yesterday, the game was televised live. For some strange reason, instead of kicking long downfield, Russell Ebert went for a short pass across ground, straight to Harris.

I can recall 4 instances where Glenelg have goaled against us, either on or after the siren, and there have been other.

1967 - Ray Button goaling with a 60 metre torpedo after the siren at Adelaide Oval to win by 4.
1977 - Graham Cornes marking as the siren sounds and goals at Norwood Oval to win by 3.
1979 - Stephen Copping kicking long on the run from the HF flank at Football Park and the ball bounces through to win by 1 point.
1982 - Paul Weston's 70-80 metre kick-in-hope fall through as the siren sounds to win by 4 at Football Park.

I was convinced for some time Glenelg was full of it. :)

I guess from a Norwood point of view, the 1984 game against West Torrens at Thebarton always sticks in the mind. We trailed by 39 points at 3/4 time but kicked 9 goals to 2 in the final term to win by 6 points. It was certainly one that got away from West Torrens.

1983 - Lose against West at Richmond after being five goals up with about ten minutes to go. Memorable for all the wrong reasons!

1986 - Great wins against Central (5 points) at Footy Park and North (8 points) at Alberton. Couldn't begrudge Woodville's 7 point win in the First-Semi.

1988 - Port had quite a few nailbiters, most memorably against Norwood (Round 4) Glenelg (R20) and North (R21).

1991 - Down by almost seven goals in third quarter against Central. Still down by four goals entering time-on in the last. Darren Smith literally kicked the match-winning goal on the siren. Port by six points.

1997 - Scotty's goal. Prelim Final v Norwood. Best win that wasn't a grand final.

Yep that was the one I was thinking of :) I reckon probably '85. Just as an aside, I loved the style of footy being played in that era, especially compared to some of the crap being dished up in the AFL these days.

Another sort-of lasy gasp win by the Eaglse was agsinst Sturt in 03, in the first few rounds just after they introduced the holding the ball out of the ruck rule. Scores were level, Luke Beveridge had no other option than to grab the ball because of the way it bounced towards Eagles goal, tackled, and I forget who kicked a point from about 45mt.

Ahh yes that sounds about right, unfortunately I was living in Ceduna at the time and only real coverage was listening to it on the radio, it was such a devastating loss for me, I've blocked out some of the details, such as when exactly he kicked it (from memory I reckon on the same weekend Greg Phillips kicked across goal in the dying stages for Collingwood which saw them cough up a lead and lose) . It would be great if Channel 10 (formerly Channel 7) would show some more of those old games from 25/30 years ago, instead of just the occasional 5 minutes on Simply Footy. I can recall watching the West/Sturt grand final during the early hours of the morning 5 or so years ago on the Community station. I Also remember channel 9 showing a couple hours footage of their games from 60's and 70's, on a Sunday afternoon, about 15/20 years ago.

Thanks for that ... I was at those last 3 games.

In fact, I played mini-league for Norwood in the '77 game ... enjoyed that :D

Game in 83' at Richmond Spelly, might not have been a notable difference at 3/4 time, but Port lead by around 5 goals late in the game and Westies flew home to roll them Im pretty sure

I was there that day, at the other end of the ground but I knew what had happened and was just shattered. I have never cursed someone so much at a footy game than him. Luke beveridge, so much talent and was good for us in the back line later on in his sturt days but early on in the fwd line in 03 was woeful.
