First ruck and centre line combinations..

Postby GWW » Mon Jan 31, 2011 8:16 pm

I saw on another thread a discussion on first ruck combinations in the 1970's.

Thought this topic might deserve its own thread, as well as centre line combinations.

Davies, Bagshaw, and Nunan for Sturt in the 1970's as was mentioned was pretty handy, plus Carey, Cornes and Hodgeman. No doubt 2 of the leading first ruck combinations in the 1970's.

In the 1980's, the SANFL era I recall most fondly, I can recall the following 1ST RUCK combinations:

Carey, McDermott, McGuinness (circa 1985)

Johnston, Obst, Ginever (mid/late 80's)

Redden, D Jarman, Hart (late 80's)

Hall, Aish, Francis (circa mid 80's)

Of the CENTRELINES I can think of the following from the 1980's

McNeill, McIntosh, Payne (also Fosdike)

Marshall, A Stringer, Symonds

Robertson, A Jarman, Phillips

Kinnear, R Ebert, Abernethy

I've only listed a few I can think of without giving that much thought to it. For those that remember the SANFL before the 1980's, I'm sure there's a heap of other combinations, particularly the golden eras - Port 1950's, Sturt 1960's etc etc.

I loved Norwood's 1975 Premiership ruck combination: Button, Wynne, Turbill.

Button and Wynne were probably in career best form, and Turbill was 100% fit, brilliant, and courageous beyond belief.

Centre line, 1982: Gallagher, McIntosh, Fosdike.

I can't ever remember Robbo playing on the wing, he was more of a ruck rover, half forward. The centre line was normally Sanders A Jarman Phillips or M Campbell A Jarman Phillips

Glenelg started the 85 GF with Moose Henwood in the Ruck;

Wayne Henwood - Peter Maynard - Chris McDermott

And the centreline for 85/86 was

Dooza Kernahan - Alan Stringer - Tony Symonds

Yeah, the title doesn't do this any favours

Otherwise I would have said Hutton Williams Tregenza for centre line ;)
