L B Nugent - Glenelg

Postby Weed_the_man » Fri Jul 14, 2006 12:07 am

East Fremantle had a player named Laurence Allen Nugent who played 128 games from 1952-1960,

Glenelg had a L. B. Nugent (Laurie we think) in 1959 & 1960. (11 games)

Until recently we thought these players were one in the same BUT recent correspondence with WAFL historians point to the likely scenario that there are two different players here

I wrote that the GFC Nugent played in 1959 on (June 21, Aug 22, Aug 29, Sep 5, Sep 12) (1960 on April 23, May 28, June 4, June 13, June 18, June 25)

The Response -
"Our L.A. Nugent is Laurence Allen. He played for East Fremantle v Perth on Saturday Aug 22, 1959.... and again Sept 5 and 12th. He played just two games in 1960 - rounds 3 and 4 on 30 April and 7 May - both those dates are different to your 1960 dates but three of the 1959 dates are the same as yours, so it looks like they are different blokes.

Can anyone help locate our LB Nugent? Does anyone have any info on this player

Could he be one and the same as SA's own Nugget Reece?
Steve Bradbury and Michael Milton. Aussie Legends.

Laurie Nugent use to own Nugent's Coins and Stamps on Rundle Street in the 70's. I was good friends with his son Steven who I went to school with. I was always under the impression that he played for East Fremantle as well as Glenelg.
The family were still mad bay supporters and use to live on the street behind Glenelg Oval.

Hi Mark,

I don't have an answer except that the 1960 "South Australian Football Year Book" has the following profile on Laurie Nugent from Glenelg:

Born 27/4/37
Ht 6.1 1/2
Wt 13.1
Games 6 (one more than you have him playing in 1959)
from North Adelaide

So this supports the theory that it is a different player. Note that my records also have him playing on the same 6 dates as you have in 1960, I don't have game by game player details for 1959 yet.
