G'Day All

Long time lurker, first time poster here :P

I'm trying to put together details of the 1979 Escort Cup but seem to be missing a couple of first round games, here's what I've got so far:

Rd.1
Apr.25 at Preston - Port Adelaide d Prahran/Centrals d Preston
Apr.25 at Gabba - West Torrens d Windsor-Zillmere/South Adelaide d Western Suburbs
May 8 at Norwood - Sturt d North Adelaide/Norwood d West Adelaide
Glenelg???
Woodville???

QF
May 15 - West Torrens d Woodville (crowd unknown)
May 22 - South Adelaide d Sturt
May 29 - Glenelg d Centrals
June 5 - Norwood d Port

SF
June 12 - South Adelaide d West Torrens (crowd unknown)
June 26 - Norwood d Glenelg (scores unknown)

GF
July 10 - South Adelaide d Norwood

-----------------------------

I'd appreciate any info anybody can provide - especially on Glenelg and Woodville in the 1st round

Cheers, Easty

This may look like a jumble of numbers now but if you copy and paste it into Excel, it should space out for you. If it doesn't, highlight the text, then choose Data/Text To Columns/Delimited/Space.

All the SANFL sides, plus Prahran and Preston from the VFA and Western Districts and Windsor/Zillmere from the QFL. The WAFL sides decided to play in the VFL night series.

Prahran and Preston were the 1978 VFA Grand finalists
Prahran won 21.15.141 to 17.17.119 in a very spiteful game.
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

Great stuff, cheers for the info.

Unfortunately, Spelly, I can't return the favour and provide you with the missing scores from the games at the Gabba - the Courier Mail didn't think they were worth more than a token report so they reported final scores only.

Any ideas why Glenelg and Woodville would get a bye in the 1st round? They finished 4th and 6th in 1978 so it couldn't have been based on final placings the previous season.

A matchday programme from that comp might offer up a clue but I've never spotted one.

The 1976 Wills Cup line-up is strange too...

SANFL: 1975 top 4 teams
WAFL: 1975 top 3 teams
VFL: 1975 top 4 teams + Footscray (1975 7th)

Have never understood how Footscray scored an invite ahead of the WAFL's 4th placed team :?

Another mystery of the NFL variety!

Sadly Fred Cook had a substance abuse problem that probably ensured we never saw the best of him..... & he still kicked 1000+ goals

Of the interstate clubs only Preston still exists in one form or another as the Northern Bullants
