Centrals - Origin of the name?

I've never known how Central got its name. It's definitely not located "centrally" in the metropolitan context - was it a club surrounded by other clubs from the wider "district" and hence it took on the name of "Central" Districts?

Is this why the CDFC and the NAFC dont seem to get along so well?

From the linked article,

"Not all SANFL Clubs were in favour of the submission. After strong lobbying from Thomas Seymour-Hill and Jack Forrester from North Adelaide the Central District and Woodville submissions were accepted only on the proviso that they serve a 5 year probationary period (1959 to 1963) in B-grade before being admitted into the SANFL competition in 1964."

Do you know of the clubs that were against the submission. As I have mentioned before there was a strong move to relocate South Adelaide to Elizabeth at that time and the vote was tied at four clubs all. Thomas Seymour-Hill with the casting vote changed SANFL history forever.

On a slightly different but semantic related theme ...

For as long as I can remember, I have always called them Central, obviously short for Central District, and never Centrals ... but it seems that Central with an 's' is the preferred name, used by the club and even on it's own scoreboard.

Similar to Walker Flat on the Murray, which is usually mis-pronounced Walkers Flat, I've always considered to addition of the 's' to be a mis-nomer.

Am I alone ... does anyone else care? x_x

quite the opposite, both clubs have a very healthy, respectful relationship.

Sorry to bust your bubble, but why then "Smithfield Plains" appear in official Government Maps??

I think with most things people shorten things to end with a y or s

I must admit, and it's probably very pedantic, but I am very picky about referring to them as Central District (without the S in the latter - and DistrictS crops up a LOT in some circles), much as I tend to be about referring to the club Woodville/West Torrens, rather than the Eagles. More so the historical side of me, I suppose.

good point ... I should have also noted the Central Districts scenario that you mention.

Is there a condition like obsessive compulsive disorder that renders people like us to dislike appending 's' to names?

It's very old school, with the S.

I remember my grandpa always calling Port Adelaide "ports" and Sturt "sturts".

Most people that I know always refer to Ports, Norths, Souths, Sturts but never Wests always Westies.

That's professionalism, not pedantry ;)

All the clubs in the early 1900s had references to the teams with the s on the end in the newspapers - Norwoods included.

The 1964 Coca Cola Bottle Tops had Central Districts as the name of the team. I think a lot of people were under the impression it was the correct name, possibly due to the WAFL team Swan Districts.
