while at tonights west v norwood match i had the radio on (both 5rph & radiotab) anyway when i had 5rph going on during the half time break daryl smith was talking about roger & the fact he coaches the u/10's at goodwood saints & went on to say that he was badly injured in a match & was never the same player after that & said he thought it was one of the stringers

.....i always thought it was stephen riley & roger had a broken jaw from the 'collision', so does anyone know who is correct or are we both wrong ?
a great high flying full forward

I'm pretty sure it was Stephen Riley.

Accident or deliberate?
I can remember when it happened but not the circumstances.

Stephen Riley, I actually wrote an English essay that year about the incident, with the angle that it was an excellent case for the introduction of "video reports" (yes, I had an English teacher who was a footy fan).

How long was Luders out for? Where were West on the ladder at this stage to end up playing in the Elim Final? Where West a serious premiership threat and what sort of effect did the Luders injury have on West's chances?

Lucky you. I got yard duty for reading footy books rather than novels.

A positive one, so it seems. West coming into the match were 7-9 (6th); playing 1st placed North 13-3. West went on to win five more in a row, and another two to reach the preliminary (8 wins in a row starting with this game).

Where did West finish in 85? 31 goals, thats a fair effort.

West beat Sturt and Norwood in the first two knock-out finals, and then lost to North by about 2 goals in the prelim.

They obviously had a fairly handy side and probably should have won more than 1 flag after their effort in 83.
Was that the last year of Kerley's coaching during that stint?
Kevin Morris coached the following year, is that right?

Jack Cahill coached them; Kerleys' last year of his 2nd stint was 84.

West secured John Cahill from Collingwood as coach, and a number of other recruits. There was an expectation they would win the flag, especially after they blitzed the pre-season competition. However, the moment the season started, West got off to a poor start and they didn't make the top 5 until late in the season. Did okay in the finals though.

Cahill coached 85, 86 and 87. Morris from 88-91.

I reckon by the time they met in the Prelim that year Westies would have been favourites to bounce the Roosters ... North from memory, went on a rampage to start the season and didn't lost until their 12th or 13th game?
They then suffered a pretty fair slump including a couple of hidings like the one above (and at the Parade late in the year) but bounced back in the Prelim.
Lol thats my memory of their season anyway, think it's pretty close to the mark.

North were favourites in the 1985 preliminary final. They had just been nutted by Glenelg in the second semi final and were starting to find some form after having a mid season slump, mainly caused by a spate of injuries. North won their first 11 matches, lost one, won the next two and then lost their next five matches.

Cheers mate, was pretty close.
Out of interest how much did they go down to the Bays by in the 2nd Semi?
