Spelly, given we are at the start of a new season, what is the worst start to a season by the previous year's Grand Finalists? I believe Port and Eagles both lost their first games in 1995, and suppose this has happened a few times. Have the previous year's Grand Finalists both ever lost the first 2, 3 or more games the next year? Or both been out of the four or five after 10 rounds? Alternatively what is the best start by a previous year's wooden spooners, and then after 5 and 10 rounds?

We actually won the first round of 1995, Flying High, against North. That day was one of three occasions where the losing side got all the Magarey Medal votes.
This is a list of Grand Finallists to lose the opening matches of the following season:
Port and Central in 1996
North and Glenelg in 1987
Norwood and Glenelg in 1983
North and Norwood in 1953
Norwood and Port in 1929
Port and Norwood in 1925
Norwood and Sturt in 1924
Port and Norwood in 1921
Both sides have never lost two in a row to start.
Torrens and North were both 5th and 6th after Round 12 in 1950
West and Sturt occupied 6th and 7th place after Round 15 in 1984
Glenelg in 1967 won the first four matches; and were top after Round 5 (4-1)
North in 2004 won the first three matches; then were 3rd after Round 5 (3-1)
Woodville in 1972 won the first three matches
South in 1964 won the first three matches; were 3rd after Round 5 (4-1); and top in Round 10 (8-2)
Sturt were 4th in Round 10 1997 (4-4-1)
North were 4th in Round 10 1979 (6-4)

Spelly, out of interest, what were the other two matches, please and what were the votes in these three games?

Thanks Spelly.
My bad memory. Thought we lost the first mathc in '95 at Woodville Oval. Though looking at the scores we should have lost that North game!!
Is that time in '84 the only time the previous year's GF's have both missed the finals?
Do you have the details of Woodville's first three games in 1972?

Yes, 1984 is the only occasion.
The first three matches in 1972 were:
Round 1
Woodville 4.3 8.11 10.13 17.17 (119)
South 3.7 7.8 8.11 9.14 (68)
Woodville, 3430
Round 2
Woodville 6.6 9.7 16.10 17.13 (115)
Torrens 2.2 6.9 9.12 11.16 (82)
Thebarton, 5315
Round 3
Woodville 3.1 8.4 12.8 16.15 (111)
West 7.4 8.6 15.10 15.13 (103)
Richmond, 4285
After Round 3, both Central and Woodville were undefeated and Round 3 1972 was the only round between 1964 and 1990 they were 1 and 2 on the ladder.

I have the 90 medal on tape if you want me to give you round by round votes from that year?

That would be awesome, thanks! I'll trade votes with you.
