I was pondering as to players who had been recruited from WAFL clubs to SANFL clubs from the 80's onwards and here is a short list I came up with. Some of these turned out to be exceptional and others ordinary at best:-

Ross Gibbs (West Perth -Glenelg)
Steve Curtis (East Perth-Port Adelaide)
Gilbert McAdam (Claremont-Central District)
Gavin Chaplin (West Perth-Central District)
Gordon Gatti (South Fremantle-South Adelaide)
Darrell Panizza (Claremont-Woodville)
Derek Kickett (Claremont-Central District)
Darren Klemm (Claremont-Woodville)
Gary Smallridge (East Fremantle-Port Adelaide)
Craig Nelson (West Perth-West Torrens)
Brant Chambers (Subiaco-Sturt)
Greg Walker (Swan Districts-Eagles)
Paul Lindsay (East Fremantle-Eagles)
Heath Younie (West Perth-North Adelaide)
Steven Koops (West Perth-North Adelaide)

How could you forget Craig Burroughs?
We assumed a State of Origin player for WA might be OK, he was one of our worst recruits ever!
I think Marty Whitelaw might have been from over there too.
Most recently we had Rory O'Brien who only lasted a year but I'd blame Jarman's coaching for that more than anything else.

Here's a few I thought of:
Wayne Henwood
Stephen Rowe
Stephen Richardson

Steve Curtis is one of my favourite all time players.

Oh yeah I forgot about those three. From what I've heard Burrows (via East Fremantle/Freo Dockers) turned out a dud for North. Whitelaw was a ruckman who hailed from West Perth and O'Brien a midfielder from Peel Thunder.

I thought Whitelaw was a decent player. How did he get on for the Roosters?

He was the youngest player ever out of the WAFL, VFL and SANFL to register 300 league games.

I believe he went to Adelaide with the intention of joining Central District. The deal faltered and he ended up playing for Port.

Pity this thread is only from 1980 onwards. Norwood picked up some rippers prior to 1980, and also a couple of infamous ones.

From 1980:
Jeff Sambell - West Perth
Ross Munns - Subiaco
Robbie De Jongh - East Perth
Ian Downsborough - West Perth

I didn't realise Ross Munns went to Norwood. He actually played for West Perth but must have had a short stint at Subiaco before heading to Adelaide.

Also I don't remember Jeff Sambell.
What position did he play and what year did Norwood recruit him?

My apologies, you're quite right. Ross Munns came from West Perth, I have no idea why I typed Subiaco :) Would you happen to know how many goals he kicked for West Perth in his 46 games?

Jeff Sambell was recruited to Norwood in 1980, he was a tallish CHF type, about 6'2"-6'3", played 11 games for Norwood but only kicked 5 goals. Serviceable at best. Apparently he only played 1 game with West Perth.

Did Allen Jakovich came to Woodville via the WAFL?

Scott Spalding - East Freo.

Carl Fragemini - East Perth (?)

A couple the other way from Port - Peter Hofner to East Freo and then another club.

And Richard Ambrose.

Perhaps best known in SA for winning the X-Lotto rather than his 14 games with Glenelg...

West Torrens recruited a WA player in the late 80s. He wore number 3 I think and was a short player who could take a speccy. Had a mo from memory.

Anyone remember his name?

Unfortunately I don't know what Munns' statistical record was in the WAFL though I'll see what I can find out.
