Lowest Magarey votes to winning Club B&F in a season...

Postby The Apostle » Sat Nov 07, 2009 7:36 pm

Paul Thomas recently polled just 3 votes in the 2009 Magarey Medal and then went on to win the club Best & Fairest (Norm Russell Medal) with 253 votes...

Is this the record for lowest Magarey votes to winning the club B&F in a season??? If no, who???
If yes, who is the next lowest???

I had a look at the Eagles players first, and found that Andrew Rogers who was B&F in 1995, polled no votes. Steven Hall in 1997 polled one. And if that was due to the club finishing in the bottom three in both years, Mark McKenzie was our B&F in 2006 - polled only three votes.

Will need to get back to you on this; I can find out other instances for you, but don't have it handy.

There would be plenty of instances of players winning their club B and F after scoring no magarey medal votes. Club coaches know what a players role is and how valuable it is to the team, while an umpire doesnt and is just looking for the flashy or best player. Hence the fact that the 2 magarey medallist didnt win their clubs B and F.

Spelly, an easier one for you (marginally) but I was thinking Ezard's Magarey win might be rare in terms of how few wins he played in. Blight played in seven wins when he won in '72, and Ezard played in seven wins this year. I'd have thought not many would have won it playing in fewer wins than that?

Jimmy Deane's two wins would have been in teams that didn't win many matches given that South never finished higher than sixth in an eight team competition between 1945 and 1963!

North would have only won about 6 games when Brenton Phillips won his medal in 1993.

Quite right, maybe not as rare as I thought. Head won it in '58 in 7 wins; Deane in '53 from 5 wins and in '57 from 2 wins (remarkable) and Phillips in '93 from 6 wins.
