The Apostle AKs first SANFL match...

Postby The Apostle » Sun Oct 25, 2009 9:47 pm

All I can remember it was North Adelaide Vs Port Adelaide at Football Park in either 1988, 1989 or 1990.

I remember it was 1989 but I could be wrong.

I got free tickets to the match and there was a huge brawl and possibly reports too.

Scores and any other info plz Spelly!

It's likely you are talking about the Round 21 1989 match; there were three minor round and three major round matches between those two sides during that period at Football Park.

Round 21 1989
North 4.2 8.8 11.10 16.13 (109)
Port 3.2 4.2 12.4 16.9 (105)
Football Park, 29204

And it wasn't a night match? That was another encounter earlier in the year on the evening of the 1989 SOO match in Melbourne.

So the only other match that it could be:

Round 14 1988
Port 1.0 5.2 8.4 12.7 (79)
North 4.5 7.10 10.13 10.15 (75)
Football Park, 12949

But because you made mention of the brawls and reports, it's probably going to be the 1989 match.

Spelly, do you have the 1988 ladder at end of minor round, including wins and losses? Just got me thinking how many games in that year there were substantial comebacks and how it affected the finals placings. From memory Port came from way behind to beat Norwood, and Glenelg lost two games at the end of the minor round after leading easily.

If its the game i'm thinking of, a game towards the end of the minor round, Port defeated Norwood quite easily in a low scoring game, the Redleds only had 1 goal at half time i think. I think that was the minor round, as opposed to a final..

Edit: i'm not sure if the game you're thinking of is the one a day or 2 after Anthony Williams tragically died, and there was a reshuffling of the Port side, with Fiacchi placed in a back pocket, starting off his successful partneship with Delaney in the last line of defence.

Thanks GWW, yeah, the game I'm thinking of was just after the accident. Was low scoring too.

THe second semi that year, reckon Norwood didn't have a goal to halftime and only kicked two.

Both of those games were:

Round 4 1988
Port 2.3 3.4 4.9 9.11 (65)
Norwood 3.6 6.9 6.11 7.15 (57)
Norwood, 13604

Round 22 1988
Port 0.3 4.4 6.7 12.13 (85)
Norwood 5.2 8.5 8.7 8.8 (56)
Football Park, 33892 (D/H)

Then the 2nd Semi
Port 3.9 5.14 9.15 10.17 (77)
Norwood 0.0 0.1 1.1 2.5 (17)
Football Park, 27048
