some of wally's other comments etc were great & i think he was one of the all time best & he played for sturt & i believe essendon

any comments out there ?

It used to sh*t me when Wally would say ... the Bays are gone!

I think he's still around ... a quick google check states that he turns 83 on Sept 11, played 94 games for Essendon ('47-'52) and 54 games for Sturt from '54.

More often than not he was probably right

Last time I spoke with John Halbert (which was late March), Wally May was very much alive and going well. John and Wally are great friends and keep in constant contact, so next time I see him I'll ask about Wally.

I'd love to hear Wally's comments on soft reports in the AFL these days.

And the best handball in the SANFL was "Comment Wally May."

I can remember Rob Barton (Sturt) running back and taking a mark in the square...and kicked a goal.
Comment Wally May..."He might have taken the mark in my day but he certainly would not have been able to take his kick"

There was something about those commentaries. There was a genuine excitement factor and a simple honesty in calling it as they saw it.

A classic case was Phil Gallagher's goal early in the final term of the 1975 GF, a massive PLAYED!!!!!! just about brought the grandstand down. There was no false political correctness with Wally, you knew exactly what he thought 100% of the time

Just an update on Wally. He had a triple by-pass operation a while ago, and was doing quite well, but just lately he's not going too well. Let's hope he pulls through it.
