Does anyone have the history on the State Jumper? Why did they alter it in the 80's? Why did they change it back? Iirc, it had black in it as well?

I'll stand corrected Punky by the guru's of this forum but in the late 70's and early 80s their was a plethora of Jumper and short changes to accomodate that new hi-tec phenomenom known as colour TV!!!

That is my throry behind the SANFL jumper change from 1980 to 1984 (the white, red, yellow and blue front with the all red back and yellow number)....

I think we went back to the "traditional" guernsey in 1985.

I think that guernsey has been around since the late 30s early 1940s. I have seen State team photos from 1947 with the current design.

Interesting that we used to have a blue top to the socks (hose). That was abandoned when we reverted to the traditional guernsey in 1985 IIRC.

I tend to agree with this. I think the "traditional" State Jumper became a brighter red (North's guernsey did this as well) and the V a brighter blue for this reason(colour TV) in the mid - late 70's.
The "new" State jumper with the white stripe was another one of Neil Kerley's bright ideas for a jumper change. He'd done it when coaching Glenelg, West Torrens and West Adelaide and whilst those ones were quite good the same couldn't be said of the "new" state jumper.

I cut an article about this very topic from the Footy Budget in the early-mid nineties. It was written by the now departed John Wood, IIRC. I'll see if I can dig it up tonight, unless spelly beats me to it

One thing I remember is that SA once wore brown and turquoise... YUK.

I also remember Mr. Wood's suggestion that Port Adelaide originally lifted its black and white colours from the then state guernsey.

Yeah that's true.

chocolate and Turquoise were the state jumper colours for years. Can't remember exactly when but the certainly into the 1920's.
The black and white stripes was the first (IIRC) state jumper and the idea was "borrowed" by some mob situated near Hoddle Street who are currently having endless tantrums about the tradition of their jumper.

I prefered the darker red state jumpers in the 1970s with the piping shrike instead of the SANFL logo.

Why has BHP changed its logo?
Why has the ANZ changed its logo?
Why has the AFL changed its logo

Marketing = perceived $$$ and relevence in the corporate world......

The old SANFL logo was changed in 1982.

Spelly I'm prepared to take you up on this one, It was changed in 1980, in 1981 it was appearing on the shorts.

I can recall the channel 9 intro for the highlights show with the "S" on the ground and a ball being bounced by the umpire and leaving the "ball" in the top gap of the S.

In the SA Football Story, Graham Cornes logo on his "new" state guernsey when he gets the 1980 Tassie medal is the "S" rather than the piping shrike.

History's been made - probably the first and last time I may win an arguement on SA footy history with Spelly...

The one weakness in my arguement is that the logo may have been changed for marketing purposes in 1980 but not adopted officially until 1982.....

I think it may have been official in 1982. I read it recently on a website - I think it's to do with all the VFL/AFL guernseys - this bit on information was to do with the State of Origin guernsey of the time.

Next to each year is the guernsey worn.

I would like to validate their sources as I believe that website has some flawed information on the SA guernsey.

As I said above Whimpress' book has a picture of Cornes in the 1980 State of Origin carnival receiving the Tassie medal with the current S SANFL logo on it (Whimpress, B. 1983 p 113)

IIRC Kernahan kicked his bag of 10 in 1984, that was the night they returned to the traditional guernsey. I'm not 100% sure of that and will stand corrected on it. I'm going off the 30 s of highlights I saw in 1984 watching the news reports in Darwin.....

Would like to see a newspaper report from the state games to verify that.

Fancy that a website with erroneous information who would ever believe that could occur.....

It would be a Victorian website, so it was a poor example.

I've got the budget from that state game. Unfortunately it makes no mention of a jumper change and all the photos are from the previous year's state game so it doesn't prove anything.

Will bet my life on it that we reverted back to the 'traditional' state guernsey - red body, blue and gold V - in 1986.

Distinctly remember the white panel being worn against WA in Perth the previous year.

I don't disagree with what you say, all footy seems to do these days is fawn to corporate excesses. I must be naive in the ways of corporate greed, but I fail to see how taking a perfectly good logo (the piping shrike) when everyone knew what it stood for, and replacing it with an unattractive giant "S" would generate extra dollars. Surely they could have marketed the piping shrike just as effectively. Just change for the sake of change IMHO.
