Kernahans in The News

While looking up old Glenelg stuff in the State Library today, I came across the following article from 8th June, 1963 in "The News".

It was about Glenelg's star Harry Kernahan and his young family. It first discussed their 3 year old son Gary, and then mentioned the following:

Mrs Kernahan is expecting another baby in August and her husband has his fingers crossed that it will be a girl. "Luckily Harry has no ambitions to raise a football or cricket team", she commented.

Unfortunately for the Kernahans, they had a son on September 1st that year, and named him Stephen.

Does anyone know if the irony of this story is well-known, or has it been forgotten over time?

No disrespect to the late great Mrs Kernahan, but thank goodness Harry had the dominate DNA, and the next two Kernahan siblings were Stephen and David.

I can not think of a family that has had a greater influence on the Glenelg Football Club than Kernahans. I'll bow to your greater knowledge Eckster but the only the Taylors would come close....

Two generations of Symonds played but not the same level of influence as the Kernahans...

Clem Rosewarne played in the '34 Flag side,his brother played league for us, and all 3 of Clem's sons represented Glenelg PLUS Laurie's contribution to Junior football and his many many years as a club administrator (rising to GM after Harry).
The Taylors influence at Glenelg was fleeting at best. The Rosewarnes,Phillis's,Symonds,Marshalls and Hewitts all contributed many more games than they did.

IMHO Unfortunately the GFC hasn't seen as much of Chad and Kane in the black and gold as we would have liked to put the Cornes family up against the Kernahans, the Phillis's and the Rosewarne's, despite Grahams 320 odd games as a player and 130 odd games as coach......

The same with Peg and his dud son, who is a hack and needs at least another five years at the Bay to develop his game, hey, look at the career Stephen Kernahan had in the AFL after a five year apprenticeship at Brighton Rd

As far as I know, and using the player game totals in "Pride of the Bay", there have been 3 father son combinations who have played 100 games each for Glenelg

1) Harry (176), Stephen (136) and David (100) Kernahan

2) Donald (118) and Mark (114) Hewett

3) Ray (206) and Chris (136) Hunt, who haven't been mentioned yet in this thread.

However, if you are going on total family members to have played League for Glenelg, I think the Rosewarnes would win with 4:
Clem (16 games), Geoff (1), Laurie (169) and Reg (89).

There are also a heap of Edwards to have played for Glenelg, but I don't know how many of these were related.
