i remember him as a 'cutting critic' & commentator of footy & worked as a clerk for a couple of bookmakers, however what was his playing record like from memory i think he played vfl for ???? & for (& coached)west torrens however i do stand corrected


bob hank rings a bell regarding dick jones

Dick Jones was a rover who played for Melbourne, I believe, but never cracked a League game. As coach of West Torrens, he is infamous for taking Bob Hank off at half time at the Parade - Hank's last League match for the Eagles.

I'll always associate him with being a writer for Footy Times circa 1984, and the funny way he used to speak when previewing games.

Is Mr Jones still with us, i think he passed away a few years ago?

Which is why Lindsay Head decided to play his final game at Norwood Oval in 1970, as a tribute to Bob Hank.

Classic Dick Jones comment on the radio
They would cross to Dick for a score in the around the grounds scores
He was a asked what the crowd was in a game between 2 low placed clubs
His reponse was
" IVE SEEN MORE PEOPLE AT THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT .."

I can just remember Dick Jones.

I can still see his face.

Always a loudmouth and an ex Detective to boot.
Reminded me of Shemp Howard from the 3 Stooges.

Remember he never seemed to blink.

Pretty sure he did pass away a few years ago.

Great writer for "The Football Times". Grew up reading that, and was always an essential purchase with pocket money.

One thing with The Football Times - and this may have been discussed before here; could never work out who The Hatchet was. Got told one name a year or so back that floored me, but don't know how true that was.

The Hatchet was none other than Ashley Hornsey the founder of the mag.

used to love reading the hatchet, come to think of it i loved the footy times, still have most of my copies in a suitcase in the shed

dick jones reminded me of alf gard the racecaller from the abc, both numbnuts

He was a classic. Used to preview games on Friday night on channel 10.

Short and to the point often.

Eg. "Sturt will win. Make no mistake about that."

Certainly did look like Shemp from the 3 stooges.

My memory of Dick Jones was that he loved Barrie Robran and you could be guaranteed when they went round the grounds, if Dick Jones was at the north game B.Robran had the three votes in what ever award the particular radio station had going. I can still hear Dick in his classic monotone style "... you can chase this around the kitchen table as many times as you like, but Barrie Robran is the best footballer in South Australia..."

Who were a few of the other guys who were around the grounds? Horrie Nelson comes to mind. How long has Dennis Browne been around - he reminds me of Dick in some ways.

Dennis Browne always had that distinctive raspy voice.

Jimmy Deane will probably always be my favourite SANFL commentator. He must be nearly getting into his 90's now (I presume Jimmy is still with us).

I could be wrong but I thought Dick Jones played some VFL for South Melbourne. Bob Hank never speaks of the incident that forced his retirement but safe to say, Dick Jones lags well behind Bob in the popularity stakes down at Thebarton.
