I am just entering players from the 1959 Night Series and West Torrens had a player by the Surname Zappia.
Does anyone know his first name or initial? This is yet another reason why all night-series/pre-season/mid-season cups games need to be put into a separate category like the AFL/WAFL/TFL/VFA do.... It would mean Peter Carey and co. would lose up to 50 games.
I'm sure I will find other players from these series which need to be added to a league list of past players who represented SANFL clubs in the 1st 18 but in none home and away series games.

In the 1956 Senior Colts Grand Final, West Torrens had a player listed as D.Zappia. That's not to say it would be him of course, there may have been brothers.
No such listing for Brooks, but I had a thought way out of left field. Back in those days, most cricket pace bowlers played Aussie Rules, Hawke, Freeman, Robins, McCarthy, Hurn, etc. SA had a fast bowler playing in the early 60s named Gordon Brooks, and his district cricket club was Woodville. Sounds like he lived in the area, that may give you something to work on.

I didn't know Brooks played for Woodville - I don't recall seeing his name on all time lists. He was, however, called for throwing by Col Egar in a tour match against New Zealand. Twas certainly an era of chuckers.

I agree Mark. During the years when we had the 5 round Foundation cup, players' games aggregates hiked up artificially making comparison to other eras flawed. Those pre-season games should be listed as such. The Foundation Cup was just a glorified series of pre-season trials and I assume normal trial games aren't included in official games aggregates?

From one of those fantastic books by John Storer, the players who played in the 1959 Night Series but not during the regular season were:
Lance Brooks
Glen Johnson
Kevin Knight
Dominic Zappia
So, I would bet that the D.Zappia from the 1956 Senior Colts side is the same player.

Incidentally, if you need the other years around that time matching the same criteria (even if they did play in a premiership match at some stage):
1958:
Barry Martin
R. Smith
1960:
Peter Ames
Romeo Cavuoto
1961:
John Foote
Trevor Tucker
1962:
Romeo Cavuoto (again!)
Leith Goulter
Jim Slaven

Spelly, do you have any info on anyone with the surname of Lokan who played in the night series in the late 50's. There were a couple of brothers who were star country footballers who i think played a bit of night footy but i'm not sure if they played any SANFL League footy.

No, I don't have anything on them, unfortunately.
