June Premiers

Postby spell_check » Thu Feb 19, 2009 9:50 pm

We all know the term. Well, this is the list of teams to have been atop of the ladder at the end of June.

A few notes:
-I haven't got the ladders between 1897-98; 1901 and 1906
-Due to the bye (1907-1920; 1991 onwards) some teams played more matches than others in that time
-On a couple of occasions the round spanned two months i.e. Saturday 30th June/Sunday 1st July. I've included these rounds.

The June Premiers ladder does not differ much from the eventual premiers tally:

Eventual premiers in brackets:
Central 7 (7)
Eagles 4 (2)
Glenelg 6 (4)
North 11 (11)
Norwood 11 (14)
Port 33 (31)
South 4 (4)
Sturt 12 (13)
Torrens 4 (4)
West 6 (8)

1981 Glenelg
1982 Sturt
1984 Port
1985 North
1986 North
1988 Central
1989 North
1990 Glenelg
1991 South
1993 Port
1994 Eagles
1995 Central
1996 Central
1998 Norwood
2000 Eagles
2001 Eagles
2002 Central
2003 West
2005 Eagles
2006 North
2008 Glenelg

46 in all, meaning 42 did the "double".

An observation that stood out for me is the 14 June Premierships won by Glenelg, West Torrens and the current Eagles. Just once has any of these three sides gone on to claim the flag - Glenelg in 1973.
