unsighted goals & rip doug long

Postby bayman » Tue Feb 10, 2009 6:29 pm

i read on the snouts that former geelong & glenelg ruckman doug long has passed away so RIP DOUG

now with dougs passing it reminds me of the game at the bay (i think 1969) that glenelg kicked a goal but the goal umpire was 'unsighted' (we think doug long was the man who kicked it), against sturt at the bay, now we all know the umpires are blind  but has there ever been any other goal that has been disallowed because the goal umpire was 'unsighted' ? even in those days the umps looked after sturt :p :p :P

The game was in 1968, round 14. I think the goal umpire was hit by a sand bag and never actually saw the ball go through the goal. As he was the sole judge of any score registered and never saw it, he couldn't award a goal.

Bayman jokingly said in those days the umpires looked after Sturt, but earlier that season in round 9, Sturt played Port Adelaide at Unley Oval and won by a solitary point after Sturt rover Roger Rigney kicked a behind after the siren. Both the field and goal umpires were stood down following the incident.

I apologise for attempting to be informative. I know that sort of thing is frowned upon in this forum.

I remember him playing too - don't know if I'm right but my childhood memory is that he wore number 5. We used to think it was pretty funny to call him Dog Lung. It's always sad (and disconcerting) to see players from your childhood pass on. RIP.

i don't know as i was 4 years old, i think it's fair to presume seeing glenelg were likely to score that 'the sandbag' didn't come from a bay supporter ;)

If my memory is correct Doug was the runner in the 74 grand final and had a two way radio stuck under his shirt and umpire Murray Ducker saw it and sent him from the ground and told him to remove it

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.

Those with a copy of Ken Eustice Pound For Pound should turn to p197 for Ken's version of the sandbag incident. I've promoted this book on this website and will do so again - for anyone interested in a thorough and entertaining history of SANFL footy from the mid50s to the mid70s - this book is a must ! This book in time will become a football collectors must-have item....
