In an earlier thread, I had the April to September totals for each year. But now that I have every days' rainfall tally, I can go one better by the start and finish dates of each season:

2014 366.2 172 2.13
2015 283.2 158 1.79

Avg. 338.2/2.03 per day

The average on the right is of course the more accurate figure, however this still does not take into account of when the rainfall occured. Even the daily tallies can be misleading - for example, Round 6 of 2006 (6th of May) was played under cloudy but fine conditions, however the rainfall recorded between 9am that day and 9am the following day was 27.8 millimetres. This all fell in the evening of that day.

Also, the seasons prior to the 70s started in late April, rather than late March/early April. This negates the driest month of the football season as we know it now.

So, using the two wettest seasons post Crows:
1992 2.88 average using the season start of 21/3
3.18 average using the 50s traditional start last weekend of April (25/4)

2001 2.76 average using the season start of 30/3
3.11 average using the last weekend of April (29/4)

On the other hand, the wettest season on record (1923), would look like:

3.96 using the span of 5/5 to 29/9
3.27 using the span of 31/3 to 29/9 (599.3mm divided by 183 days)

The top 10 wettest seasons by average are:

1923 586.1 148 3.96
1920 435.4 141 3.09
1909 419.7 141 2.98
1906 397.8 134 2.97
1942 376.0 127 2.96

1954 202.4 162 1.25

I can remember 1967 being a very dry year. We had water restrictions and I reckon there was only one wet game. It was in about August the Bays came from about 27 points down to beat North at the Bay.

I too remember 1971 as being a wet year. Up until 1971 North were generally hopeless in the wet, but suddenly under Patterson the wet didn't seem to bother us. Even Grand Final day was windy with showers, the type of weather where Port normally would have killed North, but not in that year.

How much rain fell the day of the 1970 Grand Final, it never stopped raining all day. I have never been so wet at the footy.

15.2 millimetres. Doesn't sound like much though.

I'm amazed that it was only just over 1/2 inch in the old measurements. I got to Adelaide Oval at 9:00 a.m and left around 5:00 p.m. It never stopped raining once in the 8 hours I was there. It must have only been a continuous drizzle.

Round 1 of 1999 puzzles me myself, seemed like it was all day but just 4 millimetres (or thereabouts) was recorded all around Adelaide.

I'd like to know how much rain fell the day Port Adelaide played Centrals at Footy Park in 1976. Never been so wet. A close second would have been a Central/North game at Prospect in the mid 80's.

It would have been a different year (or opponent), because Port kicked 35.16 against Central in that year at Football Park. No rainfall was recorded during that match.

The other match I am sure you are thinking of is the drawn match of Round 9 1988. 19.6mm fell at Kent Town, however it is likely to have been somewhere between 20-25mm at Prospect, because the further north you went that day
http://www.australianweathernews.com/da ... 988_06.HTM

the totals got heavier. Although I suspect North Adelaide in that chart was taken over two days.

Thanks Spell_check. It must have been a different year. It was definitely Port and Centrals got thrashed. I sat in the concourse behind the northern goal. The seats had been put in but there was no roof... and I froze - one of the few times I wondered what I was doing there.

Yes the Prospect game would have been in '88.

1977 when Port beat Central by 101 points, there was 3mm of rain recorded. Apart from that I can't see anything else prior to 1982 that is likely to be it.

413.2mm of rain has fallen this season over 185 days. We will need another 20.6 in the next week to be the wettest season since 2001, but at least average rain will have been achieved even if we do not receive another drop for the next week. That will be the first time since 2004.

2010 total is up, and it edged out last year as the wettest season since 2004. It was equal to 2003.

Ok, now to do some statistical whizzo thing and combine rainfall with a teams win/loss. Is there a club who are apparent "mud-runners" which extends over era's?

ANOVA ???

Adelaide can be very patchy with its rain.

One day earlier this year the City had about 20mm, the Airport had about 25, I'm 1/2 way between the City and beach and less than a KM from the Airport gates, I took 55mm out of my rain gauge that day

how much rain fell in the recent Port v North game?
Those conditions were the worst I've experienced ever.

It would be hard to gain some trend to find out the best "mud runner" as you would need to know when the conditions were bad. Some of those seasons may even had little rain on the weekends and overnight Friday/Saturday to affect the grounds, then during the week it did pour.

PR, I'd suspect the wind would be some of the worst encountered, rather than the rain. Looking at the data http://www.australianweathernews.com/da ... 010_09.HTM for the 5th, I'd say no more than 3-4mm around the Alberton area. It would have been fun if the Fridays' weather was on one of the weekend days! Then you could truly say it was the worst conditions ever!
