Who is the seond best Full forward in SANFL history?

Ken Farmer undoubtedly takes the number 1 mantle.

You could put a case forward for numerous players to snare second spot be it statistical or otherwise.

Not having seen all the evidence statistically or see the greats of year gone by play live I would nominate Tim Evans.

What are the thoughts of you people?

Its actually a good question. Evans is probably up there but probably benefitted from having guys like Ebert, Bradley, Kinnear, Cunningham etc feeding him. His stats though are very good, especially the 1980 season.

Hodges has to be considered as well, he had a great 1990 season, and won many games off his own boot. Its unfortunate he didnt do more in the AFL when given the chance.

I dont really recall Port in the 50's (6 in a row) or Sturt in 60's (5 in a row) having a champion full forward so, to an extent, that counts that era out.

Davies had 1 or 2 great seasons in the 80's but throughout his career played more footy in the ruck so its a bit hard to put a case forward for him.

Others to be considered would be John Roberts, Grenville Dietrich, Trevor Pierson.

There would obviously be other candidates from over last 150 or so years but obviously its easier to make judgement on players from last 30 years or so.

If you went on total goals kicked it would have to be Evans. Can some one supply some stats on goals per game etc. for all of the top ten goal kickers?

Off the top of my head, you'd have to consider...

Tim Evans
1975-1986.
1044 goals.
SANFL leading goalkicker 1977, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1984.
Port leading goalkicker 1975, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985.
Ken Farmer Medallist 1981, 1982, 1984.
100 goals in a season: 146 (1980), 125 (1982), 127 (1984).

Fred Phillis
Bos Daly
Jack Owens
Colin Churchett
Scott Hodges
Bruce Schultz
Ken Whelan
Rick Davies
Roger Luders
Grenville Dietrich
Warren Ralph
Neville Roberts (though not strictly a full-forward, kicked a lot of goals)

Stephen Nichols was a freak. Played only three seasons for Woodville, kicked over 100 goals in two of those seasons and 94 in the other.

I dont really recall Port in the 50's (6 in a row) having a champion full forward so, to an extent, that counts that era out.

Bruce Schultz by the length of the straight. 669 goals in only 124 games, a career continually interupted by illness and injury, and eventually prematurely halted due to crippling injury. He averaged 5.4 goals per game, and his final 3-4 seasons were sensational. He was actually getting better.

1937 93 goals, 15 games (6.20 average)
1938 60 goals, 11 games (5.45)
1939 98 goals, 16 games (6.13)
1940 90 goals, 13 games (6.92)
1941 100 goals, 13 games (7.69)

He kicked 10 goals in a game 12 times (10% of matches he played), second only to Farmer, and topped 5 goals 68 times (55% of games).

His final 9 games in 1941 realised this return: 10, 4, 9, 14, 3, 6, 12, 19, 2. The final game he only played 5 minutes but still kicked 2 goals to top the 100 before his career ending injury. At the rate he was kicking goals, and considering Norwood played in the 2nd Semi and Grand Finals, he could have easily topped the 150 goal mark that season ands smashed Farmer's (then) record of 134.

I cannot believe he is not in the SANFL Hall of Fame, especially considering the Full Forwards with lesser career records ahead of him.

That's a pretty good goals per game average by Schultz. 669 Goals in 124 games is an exceptional record. I thought of Evans and Hodges right away but you'd have to go with Schultzy going by those stats.

Its especially amazing that Schultz played for Norwood. I dont think we have had a consistent (more than 5 years) full forward since.

One point to remember when considering goalkicking stats is that the 1930s, 70s and 80s were the highest scoring eras, and hence it was easier to kick large bags of goals during these times.

What was amazing about Hodges is that he was always ducking his head when taking an overhead mark......

can't believe a bloke could take so many marks without watching the ball.......
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

GWW

You didnt get a bite for Trevor Pierson.

But I agree with you he kicked a 100 goals
for Woodville and from memory they finished
bottom that particular year....SENSATIONAL...

If the Crows were not around I think Tony Modra
would have kicked a few sausage rolls in the SANFL.

my top 3

1... farmer
2... hodges
3... grenville dietrich[absolute freak for his size]
