Albert Green. Champion Footballer of 1893.

Postby Leaping Lindner » Wed Oct 22, 2008 10:25 pm

This is an article from "The Express and Telegraph" October 7th 1893, which states Norwood's Albert Green is the champion footballer of 1893. How they arrived at the conclusion is anybody's guess, though possibly the opinion of the footballer writers for that particular daily.
What is interesting is it does show that his 1898 Magarey Medal wasn't a "flash in the pan"

He was actually born in NSW Jan 28, 1874

Albert Green like Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie of Port Adelaide are two very important foundation players which we have no Date of death for or even place of death.

If anyone can solve this mystery, they will have succeeded where many have failed for a long period of time - Would love to hear from anyone who has any luck

Interesting article.

OK this is something I've always wondered but have never been aware or able to find the answer it says Green played for th Norwood Cricket Club. What became of it? Did it become Kensington and changed colours? I understand East Torrens came in in teh laste 70s or was that Tea Tree Gully??
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Not sure if it was a straight name change or if other changes were involved, but ostensibly Norwood became East Torrens. I have a book at home that gives the answer so unless someone else provides the info first, I'll answer this tonight.

East Torrens have been around for a long time. They dominated the early years of District Cricket, so much so they took part of their area and introduced a new club Kensington. Tea Tree Gully were admitted to the SACA in the late 70s, from the Adelaide Turf Cricket Association.

I'd always been under the impression he was lost in the bush, on a mining expedition, but yes, that was never confirmed with no body found.

I'm still trying to uncover the reasons why he didn't play for Norwood after 1898. Mike Coward seems to think it was because he was residentially tied to both the Sturt Football & Cricket Clubs, and whereas he was happy to play cricket for Sturt, he didn't want to play football for them. However, Sturt weren't in the league at that time, so it doesn't make sense.

More likely than not it would have been another club's area (until 1901) - South perhaps??

It was the very early 70s when they moved from Norwood Oval. Cricket and football couldn't live together any more so East Torrens went looking for a new home. I was involved in practice the final night at Norwood when Robert Oatey decided to run the footballers on the ground during cricket practice. The nets were at the Beulah Road end where cricketers were slogging balls out onto the oval, and it's a miracle nobody got hurt.

That would make sense. Also would explain why there is a difference between playing cricket and footy in the same area.

I liked the first line, where it included the statement "who's photo we give above" - LOL! More like a sketch!

I've been doing research on the District System and this is clause #8 as put forward by W.B Griffith when he first proposed the District System in August 1896.

"8. That the electoral district of Sturt be allotted to a club to be called the South Adelaide, or other name."

Mystrey solved (?) for now.
