...although the most common tally of goals to win a Grand Final since 1931 is 15 goals (10 times); in the past 17 Grand Finals, 5 of those has come through with 17 goals on the winning teams side. And eight overall.
For those fans of the number 9, this is the most common goals kicked by the losing Grand Final side - 12 times.
But when Central District won with 17.11 (113) two Sundays ago, it interested me more:
1931 - North 17.13 Sturt 11.11
1976 - Sturt 17.14 Port 10.15
1977 - Port 17.11 Glenelg 16.9
1992 - Port 17.3 Glenelg 7.7
1993 - Eagles 17.20 Norwood 7.7
2003 - Central 17.9 West 11.11
2006 - Eagles 17.19 Central 7.3
2008 - Central 17.11 Glenelg 10.11
The similarities of the 1993 and 2006 scores; 2003 and 2008 scores; along with 1992 and 1993, purely come about by coincedence, as well as the fact that since 1991, only two games have been decided by less than ten points. If you want to go back further than that, only two since 1984!
Other quirks about GF scores:
3 out of 4 of Glenelg premierships have come with 21 goals on the board - 1973, 1985 and 1986.
1985-86 and 1992-93 had both Grand Finals with the same goal tallies
77 points is the most common losing score in Grand Finals - 6 times. No team has won a Grand Final with 77 points, however.
Sturt in 1940 and Norwood in 1941 had exactly the same winning score - 14.16 (100)
The winning score in the two biggest winning margins are the same - 23.15 (153)
Both of Centrals losing Grand Finals this decade had the same points - 45
With all of the above however, the scoreline by points has always been different.
