When did Port stop wearing lace-up guernseys?
(this possibly belongs in the history section, but one of the 900 moderators can move it for me)

Don't they still wear lace - under their guernsey's?
I think Sturt might have been the last club to give the lace ups away. But I'd have a guess and say Port were in the mid 90s?

Not sure when Fatal but correct me if I'm wrong, don't they get the current jumper printed up with "mock" stitching up the middle of the jumper, to keep with that tradition ?

not sure when Port stopped but think Sturt was one of the last clubs to stop using them.
Im sure both Sturt and Port were still wearing them in the 98 GF.

Don't get me started on that, I despise the printed on laces, be it of Ports current guernsey or of other club's historical guernsey's (North included).
Laces are not a part of a guernsey design, if you don't have laces to hold the thing together then printing them on is moronic!!!!

Only thing worse is when the Power printed on the leather part in the middle that held their magenta guernsey together in the 1800s. (Just before the rose pink from memory)

They sure do Phil... and a few years ago that was the only thing holding the club together...

I can't recall for certain, but I have a feeling it was either late 1990s or early 2000s ... but quite happy to be corrected.
I recall a player from sturt in the 1960s named Kym Stoekel who was a very promising young player. He went to tackle an opponent in a lace up and got his finger caught. He ripped off all the skin from his finger and tendons were permanently damaged, so he never played football again.

I think I recall Brodie Atkinson doing something similar and thats when they decided to move away from the lace up jumper...

so it must have been late 1990's

I think Sturt FC still sell lace-ups at home games and through the clubs...I'd love for the Bays to have some of these available...
I was fortunate enough to get the 2nd last lace-up the club had about 5 years ago...it was James Byrne's old number 23 lace-up, before we entered the lycra age...

My recollection is that it was a safety issue and all clubs were told to move to the current style - some time around 2000?
I think Port were the last team still using lace-ups. And I agree 100% with Wedgie - I can't stand the printed lace-up Port still use. They obviously felt lace-ups were a key part of their image given they were the last team to use them but, geez, time to move on surely.
In the 80s I recall that players from Port, South, Glenelg, Sturt, West and North still used them. Norwood, Torrens, Woodville, Central seemed to have let them go by then.
Glenelg and Sturt had most of their team in them - Neil Craig was on exception at Sturt I recall his guernsey was always a different shade of blue. At North the last one I recall was Tony Antrobus who for some reason elected to wear one in 1986.

Agree with your recall about Tony Antrobus, I reckon he might have been the only one since we changed to the stripes (and since) that had a laceup.

IIRC Craig Burton was the last to wear a lace up in the candy stripes.I think Sims wore one as well at some point.

Yes he did you're right there LL
I guess some players just preferred them - I wonder why the club bothered to go out and get them made for 1-2 players only?

2001 was the last year that lace ups were used.
The AFL (Absolute Fascist's League) ordered the SANFL to get rid of them.

I remember Paul Arnold, Brodie Atkinson and Peter Bennett wearing them too but that was fairly "early" on in retrospect.
I do remember Simsy wearing them.
Brian Wilson was the bloke who broke a finger in a lace up guernsey in the VFL and with that the use of lace ups declined very quickly because of litigation opportunities.
