the 1976 SANFL quiz

Postby rogernumber10 » Tue Jul 08, 2008 2:41 pm

1976 was the first Grand Final I ever got to attend. Even as a Norwood supporter, it was a big day with the all-time ground record for Footy Park being posted of more than 66 thousand, with the extras sitting inside the fence for the match. As such, let's have a quiz for the older ones among us, from that year of SANFL footy, when the Grand Final Budget cost you 30 cents.

Who were the 10 club captains of 1976
Lyle Skinner, Peter Marker, Barrie Robran, John Wynne, Russell Ebert, Bob Keddie, Paul Bagshaw, Bob Loveday, John Cassin, John Giradi.

Who were the 10 club coaches of 1976
Garry Window, Neil Kerley, Mike Patterson, Bob Hammond, John Cahill, Haydn Bunton, Jack Oatey, Fos Williams, Noel Teasdale, John McInnes.

Who topped 50 goals for the season in 1976 (13 players)
1. Fred Phillis, 104
2. Randall Gerlach, 96
3. Graham Reed, 69
4. Andy Bennett, 66
5. Jim Michalanney, 63

6. Darrell Cahill, 62
7. Trevor Pierson, 57
8. Father of Lleyton, 56
9. Malcolm Greenslade, 55
10. the great man Roger Woodcock, 53
11. Brian Cunningham, 52
12. Ken Whelan, 51
13. Kym Hodgeman, 50

Which four players boasted more than 400 career goals by the end of 1976?
1. Fred Phillis 812
2. Malcolm Greenslade 558

3. Brian Mulvihill 423
4. Robert Oatey 412

Who passed 200 games for Centrals during the year?
Sonny Morey

Which five players had reached 200 games for Glenelg?
Fred Phillis 237, Rex Voight 217, Peter Marker 216, Brian Colbey 210, Wayne Phillis 203.

Who led North Adelaide's goal kicking for the year?
Rodney Robran, 34

Which future Norwood captain made his league debut in 1976?
Danny Jenkins

Which future captain passed 100 games for Port Adelaide in 1976?
Brian Cunningham

Who on the South Adelaide league list had played the most games for the club by the end of 1976?
Craig Cock, 178 games

Who was the least experienced member of the Sturt premiership side?
Richard Hill, 2nd league game

Which West Adelaide player would later kick a century of goals at another club? Trevor Pierson

Which West Torrens player would play in the 1977 North Melbourne premiership? John Cassin

Which future premiership player at another SANFL club reached his 100th game for Woodville in 1976? Frank Stemper

Who was the tallest player on the ground for the 1976 Grand Final (I couldn't help but always notice this bloke)?
Edit. It was actually Greg Wild, but Paul Marrett was a way way way more interesting guy who was a fraction taller and didn't end up playing

Real tough one to finish
To the end of 1976, which five players in all SANFL history had polled the most Magarey Medal votes over their careers. As such, this is up to that point of SANFL history?
1. Lindsay Head, 179 votes
2 eq. Barrie Robran 155 votes
2 eq. Bob Hank, 155 votes
4. Russell Ebert 147 votes
5. John Cahill, 144 votes

for interest, then followed at the time Halbert (133), Marriott (122), Deane (121), Darley (116), Motley (111), Fitzgerald (110) and Eustice (109) as the guys with 100 or more career votes. Ebert polled 42 of course that year to rocket up eight spots in one go.

I did mean all players who had played in the SANFL, as I clarified that in the post with an edit. As such, Robran is in second spot and Ebert in fourth spot as at the end of 1976.

Natt was the second tallest
Scott doesn't get a run, which surprised me
Olsen a no.
The very great man Roger Woodcock was at 5th spot with 378 goals. I reckon I would have made it too obvious if I had rigged a figure to include him in the quiz.
