Out on the full - no free kick?

Postby gadj1976 » Wed Jun 25, 2008 1:51 pm

A mate and I were discussing this topic and both of us noted that in the 60's you could kick the ball out on the full and it would be thrown in.

Obviously this rule changed to make it a free to the opposition at some point. What we're wondering is when the rule changed. I'm assuming late 60's going by Grand Final replays that we've both seen.

Can't say definitively for SA but it was the 1969 season in the VFL.

I'll check this out later, but for memory they "experimented" with the rule in the SANFL when the Norwood Reserves played the Amatuer League premiers in the curtain raiser to the League Grand Final between Sturt and Glenelg in 1969. Then they implemented the rule the following season at league level.

Mind you, before this you couldn't just kick a ball out of bounds deliberately, otherwise that would result in a free kick to the opposition.

so just to clarify....

you COULD be penalised if you deliberately kicked the ball out on the full, however if you tried to kick it to a teammate, and it went out on the full, it would be thrown in?

I have 1969 footage of Diamond Jim Tilbrook booting an enormous screwie out on the full at Woodville Oval with a resulting throw in (Craig McKellar v Dean Ottens, no less! :D ).
