'big' bob maclean

firstly i hope i spelt his name correctly, but i know he came from norwood & moved to port but what i don't know is whether he actually played league footy or was he always a 'ceo' type in the club ?

just curious
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

He did play, between 1934 and 1938, 73 games with Norwood and from 1939 to 1948, 147 games with Port.

Games: 74 Norwood; 147 Port Adelaide
Premiership: 1939 Port Adelaide

Club leading goalkicker four times, 471 career goals
SANFL leading goalkicker 1947

Port Adelaide club secretary 1949-80
Port Adelaide club chairman 1983-89

BOB McLean played 74 matches for Norwood and 147 games for Port Adelaide before becoming a leading SANFL administrator. A member of Port Adelaide's 1939 premiership side, he also topped the SANFL goalkicking in 1947.
He became Port Adelaide club secretary in 1949 and held that position until 1980. He was then chairman of Port Adelaide from 1983-89.

Was also a Sheffield Shield cricketer with a highest score of 213 against Queensland. Played for East Torrens and Port Adelaide in District Cricket as a right hand bat and legspin bowler.

Died November 9, 1989, Adelaide, South Australia (aged 75 years 281 days)

Also, Port's B&F award is named after 'Big Bob' - the A. R. C. McLean Medal.

First awarded in 1986 when Martin Leslie pipped Greg Anderson by two votes...

big bob was port adelaide in a lot of ways, never far from the limelight, a huge figure in sanfl footy history. dead nearly 19 years, well i'll be buggered
