Ex WAFL players to make major impact in SANFL..

Postby GWW » Fri May 30, 2008 11:57 pm

Specifically, i'm looking at the golden era of the SANFL in 70's and 80's.

There's been quite a lot of Western Australians who adjusted to SANFL footy and made a major impact (don't think i can include Warren Ralph in the list though ;))

The major ones i can think of are Carl Fragomeni, John Duckworth, John Wynne, Ross Gibbs, Stephen Curtis, Stephen Rowe, Darryl Panizza and Allen Jakovich. To a lesser extent there was Stephen Richardson, Darren Klemm and Roger Kerr (who admittedly probably failed to live up to the hype in his one season with Port in 88).

Can anyone else think of any other ex Sandgropers who made a big impact in the SANFL throughout the 70's and 80's?

I am pretty sure it was in the late 1980's that Gordon Gatti came across and playing in his trademark Hockey boots made quite some impact for South! 8)

I thought Derek Kickett was fairly reasonable in his time at CD. What season would would it have been when he played with the Bulldogs? Without looking it up, was it 88?

Was it Peter Loughlin who came across with Stephen Rowe? I remember his WA counterpart was pretty handy for Norwood at the time as well.

Wasn't Peter Laughlin a Victorian?

Phil Haughan was good for Central in the arly 70's. Third in the Magarey, from memory.

Robbie West from WA?

Neil Balme is Western Australian I think, and I think S Rowe was born in SA but grew up in WA .. Brian Adamson and David Palm were gropers IIRC?

Would he be the son of the WA commentator of the same name?

I think it was "Grlusich", but no Aussie commentator can cope with 3 consonants in a row, so they stick in extra vowels.

I've always spelt it "Grljusich", but I've seen it spelt so many different ways it doesn't matter.

He was brother to George the commentator.

Laughlin was Victorian, brother of Test cricketer Trevor Laughlin. The guy you may be thinking of is Stephen Richardson who began at Norwood in 1987 along with Stephen Rowe.
