2nds match between South and Glenelg in 1957 at Richmond

An interesting bit of nostalgia heading into the 50 years at Richmond celebration. Before 1962, the Senior Colts, later Thirds then 19s, played the match before the Seniors. The Seconds match was played at the same time as the League - Junior Colts before it. South Adelaide prior to going to St.Marys, played the junior grades at Kensington, but this match (Round 5) was at Richmond.

Strong southerly winds prevailed in this match, with rain accompaning it. So, with two minutes to go before half time, play was brought to a halt, because all of the balls were lost into the canal! Both teams had provided two balls - each disappearing into the flowing current. There were some balls in the storage cupboard, but it was locked! Since no-one had the key, and probably thinking that it would be wise not to vandalise the cupboard to get a ball, play was abandoned.

It was decided to reschedule to the match before the State game against Victoria about a month later. Glenelg won it, 15.11 to 11.4.

Spelly mentions that South juniors played at Kensington. Given that Kensington was closed to footy in 1963 and Panther Park didn't open until 1971, where did South juniors play their games in the meantime. I actually have vague memories of them playing at Linden Park, but that was in the early 1960s. I'm puzzled as to where they played in the late 1960s.

I'm not sure about the late 60s, but you mentioned Linden Park, and that is where matches were played when the curtain raiser at Adelaide Oval was a different match - the Senior Colts would be played there instead.

And I would imagine they did not have any nets behind the goals in those days. ;)

Also, I have noticed that there were matches played at Hawthorn, and one at Glenunga Oval.
