Hey Spelly,
Was wondering if you could tell me Kym Dillon's stats. Was curious to know how many games/goals he got in his playing career before becoming a commentator.

Probably Adelaide Hawk could fill in on how many North goals he kicked, but I do know whe played 16 games for them.
For Torrens:
1981: 3 games 1 goal
1982: 1 game 1 goal (He won the Reserves Magarey Medal this year)
1983: 24 games 26 goals (4 games and 6 goals were in the Night Series, he was a member of the team that won the Escort Cup)
1984: 11 games 15 goals (2 games and 2 goals were in the Night Series)
1985: 8 games 13 goals (This was his last year, owing to a knee injury)
Total: 47 games 56 goals (41 and 48 were Premiership matches)

My records are by no means official, but here's what I have for Kym Dillon at North Adelaide:

1978 2 games, 0 goals
1979 12 games, 12 goals
1980 2 games, 1 goal

Total: 16 games, 13 goals

Wore No. 13 at North, 17 at West Torrens.

And he kicked a goal out of his behind from over the boundary line against Glenelg at thebarton .Could have been Sticks last game .And won the game for Torrens.

Practically BOG is his first game against South after giving Ron Hateley a bath (no mean feat in 1978!). Then got reported against West in his second game in a incident that involved Bob Loveday, who happened to be his boss at the time.
Never got close to living up to his potential IMO, apart from that first match.

LL, Kym Dillon sold me a pair of cricket boots at Hughes & Loveday in the Adelaide Arcade when he was still playing Under 19s. Because of that, I took notice of him when he played Norwood at the Parade in round 5 1979. It was Rodney Pope's 300th game.

I thought Dillon played very well that day and was surprised he didn't play more often in the North seniors. He always appeared to be under-rated as a player at North and Torrens where he didn't get a regular game until he won the Reserves medal.

You spoke of injuries. I knew of his horrid run of injuries at Torrens, but was he injury prone at North as well?

Sorry to resurrect this one ... but, yes I was there when he kicked that checkside out of arse gaol to win the game for Torrens. IIRC the Bays were about 15 points up halfway through the last quarter and Torrens kicked the next 3 to win by a point.

I always remember that stunned look on his face after he kicked it ... even he couldn't believe it.

Yep
From my memory West Torrens seemed to win games like that Kernahan's last game and Craig Bradley's last game for Port .

That game was mid-season in '85 ... so Sticks played the year out through to the GF win before going over to Carlton.

I am just trying to recall - Kym designed some sort of footy jumper/guernsey or something (maybe for North Adelaide) when he was working at Hughes & Loveday in the early days. It was broght up ealrier this year for some reason - or late last year.

What was that all about?

Can anyone help with this?

Amazing that you should ask ML, even if you did so almost 18 months ago, as I've been meaning to contact you to ask/tell you about this. Last month I was in the AFL Hall of Fame at the MCG, and there in the Barrie Robran 'display' was this rather unbecoming red and white guernsey. It was apparently designed by Kym Dillon in 1979, for reasons that were not entirely clear, perhaps as an alternative guernsey. This red jumper had a 12 to 15 cm-high white 'waistband', very reminiscent of the Footscray guernsey of that era, although of course of just the one colour and not two. It also had a small white V, probably only 5 cm high, on the left shoulder. This design was not well received by the players and this prototype was the only one made.

Once again the class of Barrie Robran, this time as coach, came to the fore. Instead of using it to wash the car as many might have done, Barrie quite often wore it to training. But I guess the embarrassment of the design eventually became too much for young Kymbo, resulting in him fleeing to Torrens.

Just what this guernsey is doing in the Hall of Fame is a mystery as its relevance to Barrie Robran is extremely tenuous.

Barrie donated that jumper himself as it was his training jumper and Barrie confirmed that to me personally as well. Thanks for that OTR. The info accompanying the guernsey in the HoF says it was designed by Kym Dillon and has a little story.
