I'd be interested to hear the thoughts of those who have been able to see both Graham and Chad Cornes playing in their pomp.

I'm interested in hearing the comparisons between the two.

Also, was Graham as arrogant as Chad on the field?

C'mon mate, you can give me more of a comparison. Playing styles, abilities etc..

Nowhere near as hard as Chad, yet played in a time when cheap shots and king hits were the the norm and came through relatively unscathed .. Gotta take some points from that I guess.

Barrie Robran rates Graham as one of the best players of all time.
Personally Id prefer Kane to Chad, Chads overrated as he picks up most of his touches loose in defence where Kane is all class in the engine.
Kane also exudes class where Chad has none, I assume Chad takes more after Dad than Kane does.

Anyway, no comparison between Graham and Chad IMHO. Graham by miles.

Should this be in the SANFL History section, given that neither currently play in the SANFL?

Always hard to compare different era's given the change of fitness levels and styles of today's football, but whilst Graham certainly had ability I'd rate Chad the pick of the family.

Kane is a top player no question, but his type is probably easier to replace than Chad's who yes has picked up many a loose possession in the past, but is a great winner of contested ball, strong overheard, has great endurance and can kick big goals.

Looking at the title, I thought this might be another incest story...

As a Norwood man who watched Glenelg 4-6 times a year (v Norwood and in other finals), Graham took about 5 marks that I would happily place in my top 20 of all time. He was one of THE great marks.
Scared to think how many hangers a Glenelg supporter would have seen.

Chad has evolved into a very similar footballer to his father. Both proved they can star in attack, defence or importantly on the ball.
As rogernumber 10 said, Graham took a catalogue of screamers and was consistently the best at it in his era where as high flying is not encouraged as much now nor are there as many 50-50 balls to fly for.
If weights were as big an issue when Graham played as they are now, the two players would be almost identical.
Graham was a game breaking, goal kicking ruck rover who I believe had a touch more flair than Chad, but Chad is no less effective ... again, the different eras goes a long way to explaining that subtle difference.
The game Chad went forward last year and booted six against Melbourne, taking big pack marks in the square reminded me so much of his Dad.
While I never really viewed Graham as arrogant, I suspect rival fans may disagree because I certainly remember him as being one of the most hated players by opposition fans.
Who was the better player? Chad's a star but despite his failure in the VFL, I'd plump for Graham by a whisker but not much in it.
If Graham was playing now or had gone to the VFL when he was young, he'd have played as long as he wanted to.

I agree with your assessment of the Cornes family members. Graham Cornes was a sensational player and IMHO a far better player than Chad.

I saw a far bit of Graham Cornes play and I am afraid that Chad is not in the same league as a player as his father. I am pretty sure Graham wasnt as big a goose as Chad either.

Graham would have known he was good, Chad wants everyone to think he is great.
Graham is a class above both of his boys.

I'm biased being a young kid growing up in the 70s with blonde hair, a passionate Bays supporter with a love of footy I grew up idolising Graham Cornes. First Guernsey I got I made Mum sew # 12 on the back.....

Used to live for Saturday nights in the country - Iron triangle on the Eyre Peninsula - for teh Big Replay to com on, on GTS 4 so I could hopefully watch my idol Cornesy fly for marks. I too have GF editions of the Budget from the late 70s where it wasn't a GF Budget if Graham Cornesy wasn't in the Pics of 77/78/79....standing on peoples heads....





Given the change in footy styles and philosophies 1970s v 2000s Chad probably does more of the disciplined team things that Graham did - as Kym Hodgeman says on the Tigers of Old DVD Graham Cornes was an individual - However from a footy purist point of view - skill wise Graham has it all over Chad and Kane. That is he could turn games and do freaky things on the basis of his skill level - 1973 GF when we needed it at the 32 min mark of the last qtr - case in point.

He played forward 2nd on goal kicking list, midfield ruck rover and in teh alst few years of his career went to CHB. So he played all over the ground - much like Chad does now.

For mine Graham is the better player but even as a crows fan I like how Chad Cornes goes about his footy. No complaints from me.

Didn't see much of Graham playing - but I hear he was brilliant. As the Coodabeen Champions always say - you can't compare champions of different eras!!!!

As for Chad, I ignore all the on-field stuff when assessing him as a player. I dread the Crows playing against him in Showdowns because he can do the brilliant thing + he can lift his team.

IMO don't judge him by what you see on TV - he reacts that way because of fairly intense, personal abuse by my fellow Crows fans. Unless anyone here knows him personally pretty unfair to judge him just on that.

I rank Chad ahead of Kane slightly. While Kane is a great player, if I want to pick one of them to play for my life it's Chad. Chad will win it for you while Kane will stop you from losing .... if you get my drift. I'd happily take both in our team TBH!

Was Graham Cornes the Glenelg player that was part of that famous piece of footage where he gets his face rubbed into the mud by a Norwood player who i think was John Wynne ?
