We have a book being produced on the history of the game and the publishers called for people to send through old photos etc. This photo got sent with just 'SA state game, early 1900s' on it and we have no idea who is in the shot, or even where it is, although thinking it's the MCG, because of the fence posts.
Anyone got any clues whatsoever. greatly appreciated if you do.

The fashions would lead me to believe it's probably just after World War One/Early 20's.
The guy with the camera looks a lot like Bernie Leahy. He had retired by then but his brother Tom was captaining the state side then, which might explain him being on the bench. I wouldn;t take that as gospel though.
I agree It's most likely the MCG.

Well, that's a start on a thought because we have a blank canvas so far. Much appreciated for looking.

I'm no expert on history, but those women's hats and the female fashion generally, look 1920's to me.

The guy closest in the photo looks like a cross between Neil Kerley and Robbie Williams

I love how the club doctor and the trainer both have gaspers hanging out their mouths... not much has changed there over the past 80 odd years

Think there's only one person too in the photo without a hat of some kind.

The ladies look like they are dressed from the 20's

Thats what I thought, but all your oils and linaments were hand made and in bottles back then. No packaged crap lin plastic tubs like they have today...

Although I have heard it wasnt uncommon for trainers to give players Port or sherry or something like that to warm them up on the field on a cold day ...

Reminds me of when I gave Louis Martin and Scott Darrington a pint of beer in the closing moments of the 2005 GF at Norwood Oval, they were standing in the back pocket and lets face it... not doing a lot...the ball didnt get down there much...

needed the green ginger wine a few times before playing A grade footy in the hills during the 80's

This was 60's and early 70's for Dad... Although the tradition was revived in 2005 in a 125th anniversary game at Salisbury, with a bottle of green ginger wine passed around the change rooms before the game.

Not sure if the original is clearer, but does the label on the "wine" bottle provide a clue or any other leads? - also another medicinal; bottle and pitcher on the ground may offer a lead as to the year.

Now I may be completely wrong, but I recall a similar photo from "Old Dark Navy Blue" the history of the CFC.

Might be worth having a look there ?
