Attn Spelly: 2007 Crowds

Postby Squawk » Wed Sep 12, 2007 8:05 pm

Spelly (or anyone else)

can anyone provide any analysis of crowd figures this season?

Club total attendances
club averages per game
ground averages per game
night game averages (Fri/Sat) vs day game averages
day game averages
effects of crows/power telecasts on SANFL games played at the same time

Will be interested to know before the SANFL draw is done. For instance, are Sundays the real deal for SANFL games? Glenelg and South think so. Are Friday/Sat night games popular ahead of day games? etc etc etc but the figures will offer some pointers to other questions I'm sure.

I haven't entered the crowds into the spreadsheet from about halfway through the season yet (lazy me) but I would say that PhilH has the info you need already. ;)

So North have given back Sturt's bandwagon wheels.

The BW merry-go-round continues to turn.

More Sunday fixtures for North this year plus a wetter winter have contributed to North's crowd drop off along with some very poor turn outs from the opposition clubs at Prospect - including Centrals!

Yes, careful not to take any responsibility for yourselves there BPBRB!

I am sure I have read that North's membership is also down this year, can assume that there are less people for other reasons, too.

The increase in Sunday home games also affected membership but I also think it is just a cyclic "apathy" that affects all clubs from time to time plus the perceived finals failure again might have not helped either. As for the opposition not turning up - how are we supposed to deal with that from our club's point of view? I know parking at Prospect is a supposed issue with opposition fans, but since 1991 the club has only lost the use of the Tennis Courts to park on so given the drop of overall crowd numbers and the loss of those 100 or so parks then the parking is about the same in terms of the side streets etc so that is a failed arguement from my point of view?

We played West at home twice - need I say more?
South at home on a shocker of a day weather wise and it was on the ABC
Played Norwood and Port at home when both clubs were struggling so their normal good numbers were down.
Bay's - well they never seem to travel full stop?
For some reason Centrals fans don't come to Prospect either despite their dominance over North at Prospect but maybe it is all a little "predictable" these days?

LOL wetter winter.
When it rains in Adelaide it only rains in Prospect.

Can't comment on your last point regarding Centrals crowds as me and my family all get to Prospect as we live 15 minutes away (walking).

Your first point is interesting - "I won't buy a membership as they have games on Sundays"? Weak as piss support.

I do agree with your other points regarding crowds against West and South though. :D

Lastly, it is interesting that most clubs have found a niche and are doing their best to exploit it - Dogs on Saturday nights, Norwood on Friday nights, South on Sundays etc. North have yet to either identify the niche or convince the SANFL to exploit it. Hopefully they can in the future as big crowds = stronger SANFL.

So Central supporters get blamed for the low crowds at Prospect despite having the statistics of having the most supporters at away games for the season. Interesting!
Oh, and will command God to make sure it rains all over Adelaide but not Prospect Oval next year *grins*

Is your assertion that there was a poor Centrals turnout at Prospect based on any sort of fact or just your opinion that there weren't many there? From my point of view there were always plenty of dogs fans there as there always have been in the last few years (I can't remember further back). Perhaps you get that impression because you stand amongst a North dominated group, but i assure you there were plenty of dogs fans there.

Of course your argument fails when you notice the dogs are statiscically the best away game attendees in the comp as I think the stats show. Futhermore from what I can tell North had 3 games against each of CD, Sturt and Norwood who are among the highest crowd pulling clubs in the comp. If anything the draw IMO should have helped North get bigger numbers of opposition fans at their games. I think this shows an enormous fall off of North fans this season, that can only be contributed to North fans and not some anomoly of the draw.

This is a real story teller in itself. Nevermind the fluctuating crowd pulling ability of different clubs, the weather, the timing etc. In the last 5 years the average has only ranged a maximum of 143 people, between 2,747 and 2,890.

How is it that this figure has been so constant, despite the following initiatives in that time:

Centrals being pleased with Sat night games
Glenelg and South happy with focussing on Sunday games these days
Norwood happy with Friday night games (not an initiative but a constant)
Barely any Adelaide Oval use this year and use of Woodville instead (no opinion offered here)
The Weed and Rowie advertising plus Kerls' campaign this year
Country games being played a few times a year
8 of 9 teams have played finals in the last 5 years
Admission prices have been stable
Plus - anything else you can all think of to add?

So, what does the SANFL need to do to boost crowd numbers overall? Doesn't look like much is changing after all?
