5 Victories in a Season, Spelly

Postby SnappyTom » Mon Sep 10, 2007 2:34 pm

Spelly, can you advise (and this may have been done already, apologies if so) if a team has ever defeated another five times in a single season, including both minor and major rounds?

Centrals failed at the fifth hurdle against Port in 1996, and $turt in 2002. Has it ever been done?

No angle, and it won't happen in the league in 2007 either.
Just wondering if it ever has been done.

Interesting that we failed twice at the final hurdle - others may have had 4-1 results, but got the elusive hurdle number 5.

LOL.
Somehow I don't often sing your signature...
Hehehe...

FWIW, I don't think any team has defeated another 5 times in a season since our inception, but I might be proved wrong yet...

I was thinking the same thing LEH.
BUT seeing I have a thing for footy OMENS or HOODOO'S .I believe if my memory is correct Norwood defeated the EAGLES 3 or 4 times in 1993 .And we all know what happened in that GF .
I am editing this reply to add that in 1993 the eagles also drew with glenelg

Actually I don't think Norwood beat the Eagles at all in 1993, which would make it 3-0 or 4-0 that year to the Eagles.

In 2002 Norwood, Sturt and Centrals were dominant.
Norwood could beat Centrals, but not Sturt.
Sturt could beat Norwood but not Centrals (until GF).
Norwood played Sturt 2 or 3 times in the minor round and twice in the finals, making it 4-0 or 5-0 to Sturt that year :(

Incorrect. Norwood did beat Sturt at Adel Oval in 2002.

No, the minor round losses in 1993 were to Glenelg, South and Port twice.

Actually your line of thinking was right, because the 2nd Semi opponent was Port - those two matches were the only minor round meetings:

Round 8 1993
Port 5.1 10.1 13.2 19.2 (116) - both behinds were rushed
Eagles 3.5 7.6 11.15 14.20 (104)
Alberton, 6763

Round 17 1993
Port 9.7 15.8 21.11 26.12 (168)
Eagles 3.2 7.7 13.8 21.13 (139)
Football Park, 10138

Centrals can still potentially do it this season snappy. If you were to play and defeat the Eagles in the 2SF and GF.

Cheers.
I had (falsely) assumed that it hadn't been done since our inception - must admit I never thought from the perspective of the final one in that lot... I was right about the '3 meetings, SS and GF' scenario since our inception.

Many thanks,
