It may not be clear yet, but what is significant about that match is by looking at the numbers which make up the scores in each quarter:

As you can see, all but one number there is in an increase, the South behind tally in the last quarter. There has never been a match in which all numbers increase in sequence, these 15 matches have all but one to do so.

There have been 166 occasions where one team has had the goals and behinds increase in sequence as above.

It's bloody amazing when you think about it. Why didn't those South players do the right thing and allow a couple of extra points to slip through in the final quarter of that game? It would have gone down in history!
They played at Kensington? That is Kensington sports field with the running track right? Did they have the grandstand there back then? Was there the dead owl hanging from the roof back then?
The attendance looks a bit lean, Sturt were just recovering from a poor era, as were South Adelaide, but 5,000 plus in those days would have been a shocker. Is it possible that Kensington was filled to capacity? From what I remember of it back in the 80's there appeared to be very little viewing areas apart from the western side which was terraced, and has a grandstand. Anyone know the history of Kensington sports field?

It was used as an occasional venue for premiership points, much as the same as Adelaide is used during the minor round nowadays; from 1945 to 1963. 104 League matches were played there between that time. I believe it was used also in the early 1900s.

My recollections of the Olympic Sports Field (as it was known in the 80s and 90s) were from my days in Little Athletics. There was concrete terracing all the way around, there were seats at the home straight with a booth at the finishing line (the South Western corner). There was a hut at that end, up next to the end of a line of trees. There was a toilet block at what would have been centre wing on the back straight, above the terracing there. The time clock showing the actual time was in the North Eastern Corner. Behind the small mound there was where the practise throwing area was. At the time I thought it was a run down place (which was true) but it had more character than Santos Stadium with all of the old trees, and I miss those days.

I'm not sure when it became the venue for athletics meets (or when the rubber track was installed for that matter), but I do know that everything was demolished apart from the trees and the grandstand in either late 1997 or early 1998.

Yeh, I drove past it last time I was in Adelaide, didn't get a real good look at it though, jsut noticed that it looked different.
So many things have changed in the time I have been away. Stadium in the West Parklands, Footy Park isn't Footy Park anymore and it has a new grandstand, Adelaide Oval isn't the same, there is a whopping furniture store near the airport, as well as other stuff springing up around that area. All the crappy pubs that were about the place aren't crappy anymore. Norwood's clubrooms aren't there anymore, etc. I often think it looks like a new town, but still manages to cling to that distinctive "sleepy" feel.

And I miss those aluminium benches at Footy Park, too. They looked better. Although they do live on at each suburban venue in various capacities.

Did you edit that Spelly, while I was typing?
You seem to remember it pretty well. I only went there perhaps twice in the mid-eighties, to see our school lose everything to the bigger schools at some inter-school meet. I can only remember the grandstand and the seating in the home straight.

I just added that there was 104 League matches between 1945 and 1963.
