Does minor premiers = flag?

Postby mickey » Thu Sep 06, 2007 3:39 pm

Does anybody(spelly) have the stats on how many times the minor premier has won the flag in a final 5 system. and how many times a side finishing top has gone straight from the second semi final to the grand final to win it...

I'm pretty certain that in its current run Central District has not played in an elimination or first semi-final.

Would I be right in saying the last time the Dogs had a 21 day break between their last minor round and first final they lost the Grand Final comfortably to Sturt?

Sketchy memory on this, but I reckon it was 01 (win against Eagles) when we last had final round bye.

It was 1995. This was Round 23 2001:

Central 10.1 13.2 18.6 26.7 (163)
South 0.4 3.10 6.14 12.15 (87)
Noarlunga, 1863

Out of 94 times since 1907, the minor premier has won the flag 53 times. 2nd place has won it 28 times, third 9 times, fourth 3 times and fifth once.

Bugger me, that's not even close - I was out by 6 years!

Must've been a round 22 bye around that time then (I hope so, clutching at straws now).

Central had a bye in Round 22 2002.

North were minor premier but lost the GF in 85, 86 and 89 :(

Port in 84, Port in 76, Sturt in 78, Bays 81, Bays 90, Eagles 94, Centrals 96 (?), Sturt 98, Centrals 2002 (?) some other minor premiers that failed to win the flag come to mind

Centrals in 79 were minor premier and failed to even make the GF

Eagles in 2000 as well Hondo - plenty of examples, you are correct.

I for one am looking forward to this years finals series, we have plenty of great footy to watch yet.

I think there is also a higher rate of teams making the GF from the Elim final than would be expected

Bays did it many times - 82, 87, 88, 92, 75

Port in 98, West in 91, Norwood in 80 and 84

Not so much in recent times since Centrals / Eagles dominance tho

There have been three teams since 1973 (final 5) to have missed the Grand Final from the minor premier spot:

1979 - Central
1982 - Port
1991 - South

These teams have come from the Elimination Final to the Grand Final:

1974 - Glenelg
1980 - Norwood
1982 - Glenelg
1984 - Norwood
1987 - Glenelg
1988 - Glenelg
1991 - West
1992 - Glenelg
1998 - Port
1999 - Norwood

These are a list of teams who finished Minor Premier from 1973 but lost the Grand Final:

1976 - Port
1978 - Sturt
1981 - Glenelg
1984 - Port
1985 - North
1986 - North
1989 - North
1994 - Eagles
1995 - Central
1996 - Central
1998 - Sturt
2000 - Eagles
2002 - Central
