I think Andy Porplycia is the Uncle of Jason Porplyzia. Jason's dad chose a different spelling to Andy.

Andy and Jason's dad were cousins, therefore Andy I think is Jason's first cousin once removed. Andy and Jason's dad were born in Australia, it would have been their respective fathers who had the different spellings thrust upon them when they arrived in Australia. This is not exactly sports related but the different spelling would have simply been a clerical decision made by the immigration officer who processed the papers onarrival.

So with Port 1988-1990 a good discussion point is could Russell Ebert have achieved that same success had he stayed on or was Jack Cahill the important addition that turned on 3 consecutive premierships?

My impression was that until 1987 Port were solid but not really a premiership threat but after that they were a fortress until 1990. I know some key players emerged post 1987 like Hodges however from memory the core of the 1988 premiership side was there in 1987. I recall Abernethy and Phillips returned in 1987 and Leslie was still there.

I've always felt that Cahill was the missing link who somehow made them walk taller, run faster, hit harder etc. But could Ebert have taken that quality of team to the ultimate success as well?

Knowing one of the players at the time, my 2c is that your conclusion is sound and they would never have had a 3-peat under Ebert.

Not that we'll ever know for sure, but I agree completely with your thoughts too Hondo. Hodges and Hynes were massive in 88'. The win early in the year at the Parade, after being 5 goals down and completing the week in which Anthony Williams had tragically passed away galvanised them, and they were always destined to win the flag that year imho under Jack.

As much as I loved him a player, I doubt Ebert would have won a flag as coach from 88 to 90.

Cahill made positional changes early on that changed the side - D Smith from FF to CHF; Hodges from forward flank to FF; Fiacchi to back pocket; Leslie and Phillips across half back with Abernethy.

Ebert experimented for some time with both Phillips and Leslie at CHF, whereas Cahill was able to get this sorted early on.

You only have to listen to Ebert talk, as compared to Cahill, to understand why he was never going to get the best out of Port.

I agree that Ebert would not have won the three flags.

After the game where Port beat Norwood, North, seemingly as always won at Alberton. North were reigning premiers but their title defence spluttered for the first half of the season other than the Alberton win.

Then also as so often happened at that time as well North beat Norwood at the Parade and then fronted Port at Footy Park. Such was the tightness of the competition that the winner went to second on the table and the loser dropped out of the five. North led comfortably all day and late in the last quarter were still 20 odd points in front. Cahill apparently at this stage said to his assistant, Brian Fairlough, that they were about to drop out of the five. But importantly Cahill didn't panic, kept his structure, including Phillips and Leslie in defence and Port won by less than a goal. They went on to win the flag and the reigning premier remained sixth for the rest of the season.

As we walked disappointedly from Footy Park my family and friends all agreed that if Ebert was coach he would have panicked (as most of us would have) and put Phillips and/or Leslie up forward and North would have won comfortably.

Sure Ebert was building the team but he could never beat Norwood and rarely beat North whilst he was coach. Cahill changed all that quickly.

Port had a similar win against the Bays late in the year, and then the next week the Bays gave up a similar lead against West, in both cases kicking shockingly for goal, and cost themselves a double chance. In fact going into the last round, North and the Bays were fighting for fifth, and North probably in the box seat, but Glenelg thumped Sturt and North lost to Woodville. Perhaps as an omen, Port kept Norwood goalless in the last half of the minor round.

I only saw him play in the 78' GF mate (if it's the same fella Im thinking of) and I thought he looked like a quality player .. Is a bit before my time but Im sure @robranisgod will be able to help you.

It is in fact the same player and you were right he was a quality player. He was beaten in that Grand Final by Brian Adamson but he still did some good things. He probably wasn't actually robust enough to play Centre Half Back but Hardeman was out injured for that game. He was more suited to being a running half back flanker or something similar. He had a touch of class and also played with some dash.

I don't remember him at all after that Grand Final. His style of play would certainly see him on an AFL list if he was coming through the system now instead of 40 years ago.

I am surprised to find that he was Centrals leading goalkicker in both 1975 and 1976. I really don't remember much as a forward.
