I joined the cheer squad in 1976 and got that coat at the start of 1977. I was extremely fortunate in 1983 to find an old cheer squad member from the early 70's who gave me a shirtload of old badges.
I cracked the shirts with my mum when she first bought me the dufflecoat because it was miles too big for me. In hindsight fairly glad it was. Mum was right!

I remember in the early 70's guys in cheer squads had them but also a lot had those old army greatcoats. Probably because duffle coats were too expensive too ruin. Maybe a 60/40 split but by the mid 70's the majority of cheer squad members had duffle coats.

More memories of the early 70's

I stlll have all 10 Amco (LONG-since dead petrol company chain) stickers of the 1975-76 clubs stuck to the lid of the inside of my toy box. Every time you filled up in 1975-76, you got a sticker from one of the SANFL clubs with their club logo of the time. I remember always telling dad 'get petrol at AMCO' so I could complete the set of stickers. Took about 12 months at least to get all 10 because it was tought to get Woodville, Torrent and Port out Athelstone way. They are sttuck to an old toy box, inside the lid. Lord knows how much they would be worth if I actually had the original stickers, still waiting to be unpeeled. 'Blood/n/tars, Peckers, etc etc

I cant actually ever really recall any SANFL stickers, although i can vaguely remember some Buttercup bread stickers after seeing them discussed on another forum.

My strongest memory of footy stickers was around 1978, when i was about 6, i remember being able to buy a certain chewing gum and getting VFL stickers. Then a few years later, probably early 80's, i recall being able to buy those albums and then purchasing the stickers of VFL players and sticking them into the booklets.

footy stickers at petrol stations. The other thing that was massive at the time was iron-on transfers to t-shirts that were given out in the News (primarily i think) and the Advertiser. My two younger sisters went completely crazy in about 78 when an ABBA iron-on transfer was in an arvo edition of the News, and virtually every kid in school was wearing them within 2-3 days. Crazy times.

Other thing massive from my era was VFL footy cards (Scanlens I think) whereby you laid them all out and they made up a picture of the Grand Final from the previous year. Still have my 81 and 82 sets of 168 cards each year (14 players from each of the 12 clubs) which make up a couple of Grand Final day scenes. Can't get much more than 100 or so for them, because a fair few are pretty bent at the corners and not in good nick.

Actually, i made mention of "footy stickers" from the VFL in late 70's, but on second thoughts they were actually footy cards as, you made mention of rn10, not stickers.

I wish over the years i'd actually kept all the memorabilia i'd picked up, including the Footy Times from the mid 80's when it was a very popular newspaper.....unfortunately though quite a lot of it lost over last 25 or so years :(

This is the Westies badge that came in tins of Milo back in 1963.

IIRC they were known as the "bottlecaps" for a while after West End Beer bottlecaps. Same colours. That would pre WW2.

That makes me ponder what other SANFL logo/nicknames have been changed over the years. I know West have been the Bloods and Wolves (Kerley being responsible for a change in the 70's i believe), and Woodville changed to the Warriors in the early 80's.

Anyone know of any other changes?

Coca Cola and Pepsi bottle caps. There were 3 SANFL sets 1963, 1964 position set and 1968. I had the 1964 set complete as a kid but somewhere along the line it disappeared. Big board and Tarzan grip. If anyone has any spares or wants to offload some let me know via private message. I have Gerry from At The Toss of a Coin on the lookout all the time. I especially need many from 1964 set. Cheers. Leaping Lindner , have you ever seen a John Robinson Kelloggs from 1971. John Phillips is hard to locate as well. And what about the J J Schuh and Dungey Ralph cards. Just something special about old stuff.

Southern Fan I lucked out last year getting both Von Bertouch and Sticks from Gerry. IIRC Sticks is so rare because for some reason there was less available of the first 9 or so. Having said that I still haven't got the John Robinson either.

I only have one Schuh card. This one. But mine isn't in this good condition - I got this image from a collector's site.

This is the only Dungey Ralph I've got. Almost impossible to find these days.

I'll keep an eye out for coca cola tops for you. At one stage they were turning up all the time on ebay but that seems to have slowed up recently.
