As mentioned North could have won he minor premiership if they'd wanted to.
West knew they had no chance and tried to ruffle our feathers which backfired on them big time.

After being eye gouged at the previous centre bounce! Sure it was a gross overreaction, but no Westies supporter shoulsd cry foul about the 1991 GF. All of the newspaper and TV reports of the time strongly suggested that they started the fights.

Yep, that was the backfire, West brought it on themselves and got smashed on the scoreboard and on the ground because of it.

Must say though the Sims hit was one of the worse punches i have ever seen, considering it was a king hit in the true sense of the word, to an unexpecting person it did very very minimal damage.

Geez i have seen that sort of punch do alot more damage from alot smaller type guys at local pubs around the northern suburbs. He obviously struggled when it came to the boxing training in pre season.

Gutless cowardly act which he couldnt even manage to pull off anyway, he got his premiership but funnily enough most South Australian sports fans remember Sims for throwing that punch and then getting it back with interest later in the game.

King Hits like that should have resulted in much larger penalties, same applies throughout Graingers career and the Gowans hit against North should have resulted in longer suspensions imho.

Sorry OTR i added an extra bit im between our posts,

I agree and Gowans should have been suspended for alot longer than he was imho.

Even Gowans will admit it was a gutless act that he regrets extremly.

King Hits like that can and have killed people! Im all for a stoush in football and a bit of dirty stuff but belting someone from behind where they have no chance to protect themselves is a disgrace.

Why does Copping's hit on Carlaw in 1986 not get a mention? It was the same as the other hits other than for the fact that there was no report. Carlaw was knocked unconscious.

The "best" king hit I have ever seen was Banks on Rhys Jones, 1 punch from behind, out cold, like he was shot, very dangerous.

As a Norwood person, I always rated the best sides thus:

Port 1980 - They kicked a truckload of goals but also defended amazingly well. We had an amazing day in the GF and they still held us out.
West 1983 - Thought they were more fragile at the back, and in the square when Mickan went down, but they had amazing firepower.
Sturt 1978 - Can't have them any higher, because they didn't win (just like Port in '76).

Norwood's 82 side from around round 15 onwards was AWESOME, but not over the whole year like Port in 80 or West in 83.

Just a point of view anyway.
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.

Yep I agree - that was terrible and made worse by the fact there was no report in the days before trial by video.

Not sure if Westies were fragile down back - Mark Dreher was as good a CHB as Ive seen. Tough and beautifully balanced both sides. He was actually picked in the State of Origin side for SA in '84 even though he was a Victorian.
Then you had Craig Williams at Full Back who was All Australian that year.
Throw in a a B&F winner John Kantalaftis, a future club captain Peter Winter and two running rebounding half backs in Larry Watson & Greg Summerton and I reckon it was a pretty good back six.
But as you say their firepower up forward was amazing, SpellCheck maybe able to confirm but I reckon they had 4 players kick over 50+ goals - Luders 100+, Lindner 70 from CHF, Smith & Morris would have been close and the two rovers in Conlen & Grosser would have combined for well over 50.
The other big question was how they would cope with Mickan going down, but they were lucky enough to talk DeJong out of semi-retirement and he was very a very good replacement with help from Williams at times.

Legs owning Central in the 80s when they thought they would have a few warm ups at our end, and then Macca and Co told them to go down the other end! The white socks would have scared them!

What about Callinan owning Phillips and then going on to win a premiership medal and Jack Oatey good football side the Dogs of 2010!
