Best SANFL GF you have been to and why?

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

95 was a sensational day, dogs first visit to the "big dance". But nothing will beat the feeling when the buzzer went at the end of the 2000 GF, sitting next to my Pop (who passed away last December) is a lifelong memory for me.

Have been to the last 15 or so now, but spend the entire day in the bar when the dogs aren't playing (at least that's what I think I did, been a while...).

'73 10yo had my beanie torched by Bay Cheer Squad @ 29min mark of 4th 1/4
74 first @ west lakes
76 forget Davies flash was phenomenal
80 Bays very boring
83 west too good
85 very annoying went with a bay mate on a free ticket
86 worse but same deal
89 still in therapy
That's right north fans I haven't been to a north victory. Can't go this week either because non footballing inlaws are celebrating 40th anniversary on sunday. Very inconsiderate. So because I can't go Roosters are a shoe in. I'll be watching the telecast though. So '73 would be the best but the last couple mins are erased from my tape.

97 - Norwood belted Port, that was good to watch.

00 - Dogs first flag and the emotion that followed was great.

Brad if you were watching the Bays on GF day 1980 you're right it would have been very boring seeing as the 'Legs accounted for us two weeks earlier....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Norwood supporter so I admit a prejudice:

1. 1984, a chance to write history, agro, close all day, and 2 totally stuffffffffed sides at the end.

2. 1994, an extraordinary game of SA footy.

3. 1999, the forgotten Gf, again close all day, high scoring, and won only after one P. McGuiness stopped running away from shadows all day to torp one from 50 (only touch he got), game decided in time on.

'81 might be the GF you are referring to.
Port 14.11.95 to Glenelg 6.8.44
Port led 12.11 to 2.5 @ 3/4 time.
Tigers finished the season 19-3 but were belted by Port in the 2nd Semi as well.

1973, best grand final I have ever seen, even if my side lost, played in 38 degree temp, game had everything, a credit to both sides, it was one of those games that you could really say that neither side deserved to lose

If I suppress the Glenelg supporter within myself, I'd probably plump for 2005. All the others bar '85 were one-sided.

That game after the 15 minute mark in the 2nd quarter was very one sided. If a 57 point win is counted as one sided

As a 14 year old, i was at the 81 Grand final and was very disapointed then 82 wasnt much better for me. Then in 85, as an 18 year old, I remember me and my mate going to the elizabeth tavern that night to celebrate something that we thought we would never see. We both sat there with our beer and i remember him looking at me and saying "now what"??? I looked back and said "next year".86 was magnificent. That was 21 years ago, and im still waitng for "next year". :(

You would never have thought at the end of the 1986 season that Norwood would only win 1 flag in the next 21 years and Glenelg none

Up to 1986 Norwood had played in 5 of the previous 11 Grand Finals for 4 wins and 1 loss. The Bays had played in 9 of the previous 17 Grand Finals for 3 wins and 6 losses

I know this will seem very strange but actually '76 is the one I have the most memories of, without ever having seen that game again since. Have re-watched 75, 78 and 84 so many times over and over again, after witnessing them, but have lots of memories of 76 just from being there.
Dad knew John Menz, so it was exciting that there was a link to the reserves game on the day and the crowd was the all-time record (no way it was only 66,000 either), massive build-up, amazing performance from Davies, huge upset with the result.
Just a great day at the footy.

Rog, although you might want to forget this, did you go to the 1980 Granny?

I've only ever seen the replay, but looked like a pretty good game (despite the result) ... I remember as young talent mirroring the thoughts of my old man, that Port were unbeatable and a respectable loss would be appreciated.

The old man is a bit prone to exaggeration, but he firmly believes that one late play cost us - after Norwood rallied in the final quarter there was a Kingo Taylor handball that was intercepted (maybe by Kinnear??) and resulted in a Port goal (whereas another for us was 3 on the trot to put us ahead and charging home).

Many similarities with the 99 GF from a hazy memory.

I remember hearing the same thing, except that the intercept was by Abernethy.
Fantastic efforts by Norwood in 1980 and 1999, but devasting not to win -at least it felt that way to me in 1999.

Was certainly at 1980 and that was absolutely devastating for the reason that I went there on the day thinking we had absolutely no chance at all, having come from fifth, already put out a Glenelg side that was 8 goals better than us, put out a Sturt side with Davies at the peak of his powers and facing a Port side that was 10 goals better than pretty much everyone in the comp (bar Glenelg) and 15 goals better than the really bad teams.
Port that year is still the best SANFL team I reckon I've seen -- they had a million scoring options, power on every line with Evans, Faletic, Cahill, Cunningham, Ebert, Abernethy, Williams, Phillips, Sorrell, Giles, Eckermann etc scary team.
I was just happy we were in the GF and not fifth, and thinking like your dad a 6-7 goal loss would be a good result.
To actually be in front for large parts of the day and a huge chance in the last was beyond the wildest dreams, and certainly would have eclipsed anything we achieved in 84, when we were a much better team than fifth on the ladder.

My memory of the key play is that Kinnear was certainly the interceptor, but that the handball was going to Taylor, not from him. Certainly happy to be corrected, as I've not watched it since.
Do remember most parts of the game, particularly the build up, how massive it was as the first Port v Norwood GF in my time.
We had played a couple of prelims, and beaten them in previous years, but this was the big Dance, when they were much much better, and we couldn't seal the deal.

To be honest, I'd happily trade away the 82 GF, with a win over Glenelg, and take 1980 if I could.
