You are spot on GWW. An extract from Full Points Footy of the 1990 GF :

"In Port Adelaide's right forward pocket, Hodges crashes heavily to the ground after an aerial contest with Bartlett and Duthy. After receiving attention from the trainers, he staggers to his feet, but it is immediately obvious that he is in no fit state to continue, and he is half led, half carried from the arena to be replaced by Phelps." - 24min mark of the 2nd quarter, 1990 GF.

Now, to throw another spanner in the memory works, I was sure it was '88 when Mahney and Salisbury stood toe-to-toe and traded roundhouse rights in the right forward pocket of the northern end in the first quarter?? Now I'm starting to doubt my memory..

Lets continue this general topic of conversation for Tassie80 :D

A couple of things i remember from the 2 games:

88 - Brown's lucky goal, with the funny bounce set up the momentum

88 - Jim West missed a goal from the edge of the goalsquare, very handy :D

90 - Mahney very valuable in the first quarter setting up quite a few opportunities to goal in first qtr.

90 - Ben Harris did well on Fidge which was very important

Oh yes you're right there CP, he did kick a few goals in that first half in 90, i think i was just mesmerized by Mahney's skill level and i forgot about Settre ;)

Port came from the clouds in quite a few games that year.

Most notably in round 4 against Norwood, the 'Anthony Williams' match in which George Fiacchi was a late replacement for Stephen Williams in the back pocket, starred and never looked back.

A few other great comebacks against North and Glenelg late in the minor round.

Clearly remember Roger Kerr having his ear ripped off against Glenelg at Alberton.

And keeping Norwood goal-less for four quarters (last half of round 22, first half of Second-Semi.)

A couple of things i remember from the 2 games:

Bruce Abernethy's three bounces along the Western wing with Chris McDermott in pursuit.

Wayne Mahney giving Jim West a love-tap at half-time (1988).

"Wayne Mahney has just digraced himself in front of a national audience." - Daryl Hicks, ABC commentator.

Wayne Mahney giving Chris McDermott a love-tap in the first quarter (1990).

McDermott squares up with two knees into Mahney, who I think then gets the free kick and kicks a goal from about 50m...

Sorry 1980 TM, I'd just like to touch on another couple of matters.. ;)

It's not 1988, but how many players who played in the 1990 GF made it onto the inaugural Crows list?? There'd be quite a few I'd imagine. Off the top of my head :

Jameson, Marshall, McDermott, Tregenza, Brown, D.Smith, Liptak, Bartlett, Hodges, Thompson, Murphy, Abernethy.. Any others?? And of course, a certain G.Wanganeen wandered over to Windy Hill for the start of a fairly decent AFL career. ;)

Not unintentional. More like a momentary lapse of reason. One of the rare 'dirty' acts Johnno ever got embroiled in over his career. Did the 'time' though, in a big way, and justifiably so too. It was just as bad as the Bickley elbow on Wakelin, and ironically, received the same suspension as Bickley did some 14-15yrs later, although Dilena didn't have to have his face reconstructed. ;)

Was nothing like the Bickley incident.

By memory, I think Hodges injured a knee in the '88 Grand Final, came back on strapped up and limping and still kicked a few goals on (I think Chris Duthy). David Hynes had a big year in '88. Stephen Williams came back after his handful of games with the Brisbane Bears the year before, ushering Port into a spoilt decade of premiership glory. Mark Williams came back in the 1990 season. Greg Phillips was the 'rock' at CHB between 88-92. They were good days in the SANFL prior to the advent of the Crows.

Yup, Hodges landed awkwardly and stuffed his knee...not as bad as he did in 90 though. Hynes had a fantastic year. Williams was awesome. The half back line in 88 of Leslie, Phillips, Abernethy was as close to as good as it gets.

Agree with all of those except on Harris. He was terrible and when you see the interview from Channel 9 after the match, he knew it as well.

Will add another couple:

* Hynes throwing 3 of the biggest punches youll ever see in your life at Bartlett in the first Q of 1990. Started close to an all in. Port got two goals out of it as well.

* Brown and Salisbury going toe to toe throwing haymakers at each other in the 3rd Q of 1988.

* Danny Hughes, in a ruck contest in the last 5 minutes of the 92 GF, completely missing the ball and punching Seebohm in the face, knocking him out.

Probably right there about Harris, Macca, i do recall though that Fidge wasn't overly dominant, he may have had a downer as opposed to Harris doing well on him.

I remember Benny falling over in the goalsquare after having an airy and Fidge nudged him, carrying him forward to the ground with his momentum. Fidge strolled into an open goal.

Very underrated player though, Benny Harris.

The difference is that Bickley was an intentional elbow to the face of Wakelin, swung seconds after the ball had been handballed away - very similar to the Solomon/Ling incident this year. Johnstons was a terrible attempt at a hip and shoulder but when watching the footage, Dilena does not get struck by his elbow.

This is the Bickley incident:

It's a very hazy memory 18 years on, but In the 90' GF I was sitting with my mates behind the Northern goals, and at one point there was a fracas (might have been just before the game or early first quarter).

Started because one of the Bays players fell over and the Port fans down that end gave a pretty loud ironic cheer ... It was then almost as if Duthy, responding to the crowd noise turned around thinking one of his teammates had been felled and it was then "on" between he and Hynes.

As a neutral supporter, I thought the 90' GF was one of the most entertaining I've seen and the after party at Alberton was a cracker (until the riot squad rudely interrupted lol)
