Booney- State of Origin captain, and one of the premier midfielders in the SANFL throughout the 80's- thats why.

Let me guess, you'd have Phil Harrison on a wing?

Long time reader 1st time poster

Great teams listed and I do find it hard to quibble about most of the players named

However M Taylor and and B Abernethy were in the VFL from 1981 on so I find it hard to think of how they could get a run.

What about Jack Halbert's love child J Paynter? A good player in teams that made the finals 1980 to 1985 (excluding 84).

Sorry Wedgie but the coach has to be G Cornes took boys who trained at St Mary's to their 2nd last finals series (1983) and then 1st, 1st, 2nd (due to 13 players out of 20 being sick with the flu), 2nd and 5th

We won't even mention his record with the SOO and SL teams.....

So the 1980 TAssie Medalist has to be our coach of the decade

PS he was trying to coach behind the scenes at the bay in 82 too

Abers came back from Melbourne in 87 (i think) and was a key reason why port won the 88 and 89 flags.

Five seasons and four premierships in the 80s.

Taylor played four seasons in the 80s and they weren't too shabby either - unlucky not to win the Magarey in 1980 won Norwood's B&F in his second last season (1986).

I was under the impression Taylor left at the end of 1980 (after coming 2nd in the Magarey behind Russell - who I agree should be in the side of the 80s) Played at in the VFL and when he finished playing in about 86-87 moved into the Assistant coaching job at Collingwood and came back to Adelaide in 1991 to join the Crows.

However living in the NT during the 80s and relying on posted copies of the 'Tiser and Sunday Mail as a kid to get the results each week I admit I didn't live and breathe SANFL footy as much as the general populance on this site for reasons of geography!!!!

I think Kingo Taylor came back to play in about 85, 86 and maybe 87 ... As MP said won the B&F in 86' in what was a relatively poor season for our boys, but whilst a good, solid player wasn't as much of a standout given his age and the standard of the competition once he returned ... Agreed 1980 he had a fantastic season, so he could very well gain a berth with many judges, but would probably get squeezed out of my lineup by one of the many who were SANFL regulars for the majority of the decade.
