I see that the forum has disappeared on FootySA. This thread on that site had 951 posts, 49 short of the 1000 I was hoping for. I only have the posts copied up to the 17th of October - here they are:

Any player you can think of
Booney mentioned that he would like to see the "What team do you support" thread get to 1000 posts. Well, I reakon this could get to the 1000 posts: Name any player you can think of who has played SANFL.

I'm not just after lists of names but also any physical features about them, or what position they predominantly played, or maybe in your opinion they shouldn't have played at all. Perhaps they were your favourite player at the time, a player for some reason you remember from that particular era. Their guernsey number and any fact you can think of about the player is good as well.

For starters, how about No. 2 for Norwood in the 70's - Mike Poulter with that hair do.

19-Aug-05, 7:27 PM spell_check2

Does anyone know what numbers Paul Nikoletos and David Querzoli wore for West Torrens? They both played from 1983 to 1985.

19-Aug-05, 7:45 PM ORDoubleBlues

Tim McNeil - Had an awesome year for Norwood back in the '80's and then it seemed like he just vanished off the face of the earth.

19-Aug-05, 7:48 PM kevin

1. for Sturt. Bob Shearman

19-Aug-05, 8:46 PM McAlmanac

A young red headed wingman from Ferryden Park, who had captained Woodville Colts (Under 17's) to a premiership in 1973, took over the number 13 guernsey in the senior side from a would-be 2-time AFL premiership coach.

Phil Maylin.

19-Aug-05, 8:46 PM smithy

11 - Tim Paech
31 - Ray Wilson

19-Aug-05, 8:48 PM Wedgie

The only real player ever of the SANFL.
My hero and everyone elses:

5 - Grenville Dietrich.

19-Aug-05, 9:03 PM eddie-eagle

Yes Grenville was a hero - but only at the Eagles for his short stint

19-Aug-05, 9:08 PM smithy

Old Grenville.......maybe we should have a cult heroes thread.

19-Aug-05, 9:10 PM therisingblues

The Merv Hughes of footy...Good old Grenville. They should create a Police drama for him on the tele.

19-Aug-05, 9:20 PM spell_check2

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed

Wayne Weidemann - No. 11 for the Eagles and No. 33 for the Crows.

19-Aug-05, 9:27 PM eddie-eagle

Bruce Bruce Bruce Bruce Lindsay - State of Origin Captain 89 & champion captain of the EAGS

19-Aug-05, 9:45 PM spell_check2

McAlmanac - this one is for you - Trevor Ettridge who played for Woodville and West Torrens.

19-Aug-05, 9:49 PM spell_check2

19-Aug-05, 10:39 PM spell_check2

I don't think so.

19-Aug-05, 10:40 PM Wedgie

Didn't play for Woodville or the new Eagles but "Scruff" Hanna was a legend, would have loved to be there that last day at Adelaide Oval in his (and both Woodville and Torrens) last game.
Poor bugger, broke his neck a few years prior to that in my Uncles pool at Gumeracha.
Top bloke.

19-Aug-05, 10:42 PM Dutchy10

Motlop from the bays - cant remember First name or number (23?) used to come off the bench in the last half with fresh legs and run amok

19-Aug-05, 11:22 PM coorong

I trained with Aldo Russianwhen he jumped the fence on the outer on a thursday night and hid for three laps then jumped back over and lead the pack on a four lap sprint.

Told Murray Weideman, I think this is as fit as I have ever been.

Aldo once told Murray during a spray at half time, dont upset me Murray, youn know I like my pie and smoke during the long break.

19-Aug-05, 11:29 PM spell_check2

Bernie Smith from West, went to Geelong and won a Brownlow.

19-Aug-05, 11:43 PM spell_check2

Yes. Between 1997 and 2001, he played 67 games kicked 19 goals and 20 behinds for the Eagles.

19-Aug-05, 11:43 PM coorong

Was there when Tickets Twomey came to the club, first two or three games were shockers. Jack Cahill just before half time said, go get a club envelope, put some paper in it and seal it. At half time he gave it to Tickets who said, whats this. Its a one way flight to Melbourne David, if you dont put in, in the second half your on it at 5.30.

Won the game for us and played many more. Always lived up to his nickname though.

Could mention the lovable antics of Rotten Ronny, Doc, Neville Shaw and a few others but maybe over a drink.

My favourites were Des Herbert, Youngster, Craig Williams (see you at Caulfield) Roger Luders, Peter Winter. Rubbers and Peter Meuret.

From other clubs. adored the way Cornsey played, as well as the champion of all champions Russel Ebert.

From other teams always admired

Tiger66, wasn't he the one of the players Kerley singled out before the game for an extra special effort and then at the end he was so knackered that he was unfit to join the post game celebrations.

From fullpointsfooty website.

Queensland's state league side bounced back from its recent heavy loss to Western Australia by defeating the ACT for the third consecutive time at the Gabba on Saturday. The match was played as a curtain-raiser to the AFL fixture between Melbourne and Brisbane. After a closely contested first two quarters, Queensland pulled away during the second half to win in the end with some ease, by 38 points. Final scores were Queensland 18.14 (122) to ACT 12.12 (84). Morningside on-baller David Lillico was best for Queensland, while ACT skipper Brett Knowles of Ainslie was best for the losers. Queensland's victory earns it the Phil Harper Cup.

22-Aug-05, 4:51 PM spell_check2

The caption from South Gawler Lions website (where the three photos') came from said "Garth Newton and son".

22-Aug-05, 5:12 PM bulldogproud

I know it is cricket and not football but in our C Grade one week back in the 80's were the following players: Alan Suck; Ozzie Moore; David Brown and Nick Cock. We had to phone the teams through to the papers on a Thursday night and David Hookes as captain of the club set the caller up with arranging the team lists so that those names would be the last read out in the team in the order: Suck Moore Brown Cock

22-Aug-05, 5:16 PM bulldogproud

Must admit that reading these names bring the memories flooding back:
Went to school with Stuart Whitehouse, Dominic Fotia and Paul Ravesi (Salesian College)
Was involved in cricket with Ben Higgins, David Hookes, James Pyke and David Foote (West Torrens Cricket Club)
One interesting fact about David Foote - he ran Darryl Scott of Sturt out with his very first touch of the cricket ball on A Grade Debut - first ball of the match.
Another name:
Brendon Maguire ........ is playing quite well!

22-Aug-05, 5:23 PM bulldogproud

Some other great Centrals names:

On a non-Centrals base, loved it when North Adelaide's bench in the eighties consisted of Mick Redden and (not sure of his first name) White - the bench was Redden White.

22-Aug-05, 5:25 PM bulldogproud

On the subject of benches, we started one game last year with a very hungry bench - McKenzie, Currie and Ware. McKenzie's nickname is buckets and Ware's is Noodles, so we had a bench of a Bucket of Currie and Noodles.

Speaking of booming kicks - Paul Harradine. Bombed a goal for the Warriors against Port in 83 from a step forward of the centre circle. Bounced in the square and through it went.

Graham Nicholls No 22 for Norwood. Was dropped for refusing to iron out an opponent by a famous coach (said he didn't play football that way!!) .......Next week , after being dropped, was selected in The SA state team....later became Rev Graham Nicholls, a Uniting Church Minister. Very fair player. Pity we didn't have more with his attitude to the game playing these days.

I love it when I see "last post: McAlmanac" next to the thread name.

Btw, you and Adelaide Hawk on BigFooty are fantastic at coming up with names.

Like Kevin Smith, John Everingham and Ian Abraham - that purler of a thread - Woodville, team of the century.

15-Sep-05, 11:53 PM spell_check2

He's the player most talked about at the moment on this site: Luke Toia

15-Sep-05, 11:54 PM McAlmanac

Those first two are certainly obscure, but I did see Ian Abraham play when I was a kid. Number 15 at full back, and a good player.

Adelaide Hawk is outstanding, and another poster "robranisgod" is as well.

28-Sep-05, 10:28 PM McAlmanac

Some gaps:

"Bob" Perry - Woodville
Brett Beecroft - "Sturt"
Paul McCormack - "Norwood"
Donald Welch - "Woodville" (appalling prancing pony of a footballer)
Jimmy Wynd - "Central District"
Zane "Separovich" - Port Adelaide
Leigh Whicker - "Sturt"
Keith Spencer - "Port Adelaide"
Garry Sporn - "North Adelaide"
Jon Simpson - "Woodville, Port Adelaide"
Phil Sanders - "Sturt"
Don Roach - "West Adelaide, Norwood"
Peter Reid - "Sturt"
Greg Thomas - "Norwood"
Doug Olds - "Norwood"
Rod O'Connor - "Central District"
Paul Page - "South Adelaide"
Bob Kingston - "Norwood, Port Adelaide"
Barry Bamford - "North Adelaide"
Kym Barr - "North Adelaide"
Robert Briedis - "Woodville" (brother of Arnold - a dud)
Clive Brooks - "Sturt"
Greg Dempsey - "West Adelaide"
Syd Jackson - "Glenelg"
Des Hicks - "Sturt, Woodville"
Mark Caesarowicz - "South Adelaide"
Gary Christie - "South Adelaide"

Some corrections:

Brenton Honor - South Adelaide
Keith Johns (I think I posted that one) is actually Kevin Johns - Central District. Moustachioed 60's/70's half back flanker with superb sideburns.

28-Sep-05, 10:29 PM spell_check2

I knew McAlmanac would come to the rescue. Many thanks again. :)

28-Sep-05, 10:32 PM spell_check2

I see that the Gary Christie I posted as Woodville must be David Christie - they would have played around the same time, hence the confusion.

28-Sep-05, 10:32 PM LeapingLindner

Hey Mc - Barry (Father of Scott) Bamford also played at South and West.

28-Sep-05, 10:44 PM McAlmanac

David Christie 1964-1970. Gary Christie late 70's - late 80's.

Barry Bamford at South and West? New one to me!

28-Sep-05, 10:52 PM LeapingLindner

Somewhere in the "archives" I have a photo of him in a Westies striped jumper (so I'm guessing it was 74 or 75). I have to try and dig it up.

28-Sep-05, 11:07 PM spell_check2

Oh well, at least it's settled now.

No-one has mentioned Choco Williams yet?!

Not sure if he's been mentioned (only had an hour or so to scroll though 710 posts - top effort, all!), but John Brealey, North Adelaide in the 80's. Underrated player who used to play up forward a bit. Kicked 6 in a game once if I recall. Wedgie, you'd remember him no doubt?

21-Oct-05, 1:36 PM dragonfly

Hooray for Colin Brown - father of John, Matt and Cletus.

cue Borat...

21-Oct-05, 1:40 PM spell_check2

This is based from 1907, I would say around 10000.

About 1100 give or take a few for the 7 established clubs.
900 or so for Glenelg.
500 for Central.
400 for Woodville.
140 for Eagles (first SANFL game played with Eagles and not coming from Torrens or Woodville)
That's 9640, and I would overestimate on those estimates a bit because of the number of players to play less than 20 games to be higher in the SANFL than that of the VFL/AFL.

21-Oct-05, 1:50 PM ecky

On that basis, this thread may keep going for quite a while!

Unless someone who has a full list of players (Last Rhendition?) decides to post on here - that could finish it off quite quickly!
