I still think back with joy to those days when Norwood supporters complain about the salary cap.

Doug Notso was crap before he left North. One of the greatest downhill skiers of all time.

Definately wasn't, I remember people describing him as the next Robran in 89.
I went to every game in 89 and at times he had the aerial skills of Modra whilst being awesome on the ground too.
I was more upset he was going than A.Jarman at the time.
Luckily he never went on to do anything and was a huge waste of $$$ for Norwood.
Man, they could do with the money they spent on those 2 now!

Not that Im any judge mind you, I thought Adam Saliba was going to be huge, I remember describing him as having the hands of A.Jarman and the leg of D.Jarman.
I don't think he ever played a decent game again after I put those mockers on him.
I also put the mockers on Darren Van Zetta in the early 90s who managed to fly off into the Wedgie mockers universe of non achievement.

Someone told me that in a game for the Crows, Saliba picked up 40 touches in a half of footy- can anyone confirm this?
It may have been a trial game, or a regular season, I'm not sure.
He was one of those "wasted talents"- very talented & could do anything, but the mind wasn't willing.
I think he preferred being back at Gaza, or wasn't able to cope with the weight of expectation.

Like Bob Hammond you mean?

Exactly.
After being a champion of Australia it could only be downhill though.;)

well, Bob Hammond did coach Norwood to the 1977 National Football League Championship over East Perth (to win the Ardath Cup).

I'm with you Tassie - the pic looks suspiciously like Unley Oval.

Re Jarman and Smart, the cost to Norwood from memory was $60K for the pair. Dougie was a great Javelin thrower at school and in contrast his younger brother Sam played for Norwood, then listed at the Crows I think and then Carlton - but studying medicine was always his biggest priority.
Steve Bradbury and Michael Milton. Aussie Legends.

Looks vagely like the Oatey stand at Unley or even teh old Kensington Oval Grand stand???

I reckon that's the Barry Jarman Stand in the background so it's Woodville Oval. Been a while since I've seen the BJ stand close up but I'm pretty sure I'm right. That being the case it may have been taken on the day of the first GF.

Ok I've changed my mind you're right LL it could be the BJ Stand, I was confusing it with the Fox stand, I think, (the stand where the visitors always change at Pecker Park).

Pecker supporters help me out here as you face the G/stands at Pecker Park from the outer, the Fox stand is on the left and the BJ stand is on the right, right?
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

A belated yes, 1980 TM.

I'm re-hashing this thread to give people an idea of Norwood that season in the Under 17s. It would have been the biggest upset of all time in any grade I reakon had North won that 1st GF:

Norwood
Rd 1 32.10 vs Sturt 3.10
Rd 2 23.16 vs Central 8.10
Rd 3 30.18 vs West 5.2
Rd 4 27.18 vs North 6.1
Rd 5 30.15 vs South 5.8
Rd 6 11.12 vs Port 9.8
Rd 7 25.18 vs Torrens 2.1
Rd 8 21.17 vs Glenelg 11.11
Rd 9 21.18 vs Sturt 9.9
Rd 10 24.17 vs North 7.3
Rd 11 26.10 vs South 7.4
Rd 12 26.11 vs Central 7.15
Rd 13 17.5 vs Port 4.4
Rd 14 25.18 vs Torrens 6.4
Rd 15 18.12 vs Glenelg 8.9
Rd 16 30.17 vs Woodville 2.3
Rd 17 18.10 vs Sturt 5.7
Rd 18 20.22 vs West 0.1
Rd 19 15.15 vs North 6.7
2SF 19.14 vs North 8.5

Only once did a team get within ten goals of Norwood - Port in Rd 6 (16 pts). Their average winning margin was 110.35 points up to and including the 2nd Semi.

North were 3rd after the minor round, with 13 wins and a draw.

The quarter scores for the replay were:
Norwood 3.3 6.8 10.13 14.14 (98)
North 2.6 4.9 7.10 7.12 (54)

Trophy winners that year were...

Best and Fairest - Gilbert McAdam
Runner Up - Bruce Tonkin
Most McCallum Medal Votes - Gilbert McAdam
Most Improved - Con Nicholas
Most Consistent - Darren Jarman
Coaches Trophy - Stephen Pill
Service Award - Ben Wicks

Apart from the Best and Fairest and The Most Consistent I have no idea what happened to the rest of them. Con Nicholas trained with the league team in the lead up to the 1985 Grand Final even though he hadn't played league football. It was thought he might be Nunan's wild card in selection but he didn't get a spot. He didn't play any league football in the end from memory.
It also worth noting that Norwood's Under 17s were undefeated in the minor round (19 games) and the Second Semi Final, so the first Grand Final was almost the miracle of miracles in terms of a win.

Con Nicholas didnt play league footy
but did play in my cricket team.

also played cricket for ingle farm thats where he played his juniors
