Great photo. Was it taken before the 1964 Grand Final? The Port website has it erroneously dated as after the 1957 Grand Final but that can't be so because the T.S. Hill trophy only commenced in 1963. They were tricked by the fact that Fos Williams is in playing gear. That is why I think it may have been taken prior to the 1964 Grand Final because Port at that stage would have had the cup.

Bob Fabian is the interesting player in the photo. He played for Port for 11 years, I don't think that he was ever an automatic selection, but he must have played in about 4 premierships. Given that Geof Motley played in 9 winning flags, Chicken Hayes in 8, Fos WIlliams in 7, I think and Peter Obst probably in about 6, having a photo of 5 players with about 34 premierships between them is just unbelievable.

We rightly marvel at what the Gowans brothers and Matt Slade et al achieved for Central, but the Port players did it when it was the SANFL was the biggest ticket in town.

The Alberton Oval shot would have been from the 1960s. The time clocks were installed in 1965 and cheer squads had come into vogue a couple of years earlier.

I too love it.

The player towering above the others is the great Harold Oliver. The picture was taken shortly before World War One. Would it be the oldest surviving action shot of South Australian football?

As a kid 50 years ago I was stunned to see this picture with the Adelaide Oval scoreboard in the background. I just couldn't believe that the scoreboard could be that old. It's twice as old now. May it always remain.

There were 2 types of supPORTers in those days
Those that barracked for Port , and those that wish they did

Used to live near the oval
In my pushbike days , if no one could take me to see Norwood, I would often ride the bike to Alberton and watch Port play

Booney keep the images coming

This may surprise but I too spent many days @ Alberton.
Played lots of games there - really good surface, one of the driest in the League.
Also spent many days in the Members Stand for U19s, Reserves & League Games.

I recall spending many hours under the Old Stand in the change rooms watching legends like Ebert, Clifford, Evans, Cunningham, Belton, Harrison, Johnston, Phillips, Leslie, Giles, Faletic, Sorrell, etc. Not to mention Cahill & Tredrea (Gary not Warren).

I hated them with a passion but was also soooooo envious

Really?

I remember going out onto the oval at quarter-time, half-time and after the game as a young bloke in the late '80s to late '90s. If only I held onto all those autographs I collected.

You blokes are sitting on a goldmine with all these photos! Keep them coming.

I always loved Paul Northeast. Some would say we shared the same kicking style...
