Does that make North Adelaide the last SANFL side to beat a VFL side?

probably the same way he treated his wife

I beleive South Adelaide played Carlton at panther park,St Marys in about 1971. I think it was the following year they played Essendon also at Panther Park. Both were preseason matches, both saw South defeated comfortably. Darley v Nicholls was a highlight for a young 11 year old spectator.

it seems that NA were the last SANFL team to defeat a VFL team (unless you include G d Adelaide 'b')

Its hard to determine what matches are worthy of the list (i.e. not trials)...... obviously VFL night series, COA ect....

Another trial game that I'm aware of is that Port played Essendon in the pre-season, I think in 1994, at Football Park. I'm sure that Port won - albeit against very much a second string Essendon team. There was a lot of it's on again, off again, lead up to the trial - it was only a few days before hand that it was definitely decided that the match would be played. So, technically, this might be the last time that a SANFL side beat a VFL-AFL team (other than the some of the other trials versus 'B'teams etc. already mentioned in this thread) but the last game of any real status where that occurred would have been North Adelaide's victories in 1986.

1995. WWT won by a reasonable margin. I remember posting a request on rec.sport.football.australian to get the result of this game. You should be able to find it using Google to search that newsgroup.

I believe you are thinking of the 1971 Rothmans Championships they held after this in Perth. North and Port were involved, they played only 2 halves of 30 minutes. It was won by Hawthorn 12-3 to Clarement 4-3.

Scores for SA teams:

Round 1
Claremont 11-3, North Adelaide 7-4
Port Adelaide 9-3, Richmond 8-8

Losers' Play off
Richmond 6-4, North 5-3

Semi Finals:
Claremont 10-6, Port Adelaide 3-5

3rd-8th playoffs:
East Perth 9-9, North Adelaide 7-7
West Perth 5-9, Port Adelaide 2-7

Final Placings:
1 Hawthorn
2 Claremont
3 West Perth
4 Port Adelaide
5 Richmond
6 East Fremantle
7 East Perth
8 North Adelaide

Both wore black and white!

Full Points footy website has comprehensive summary and results from these tournaments. The championship held in 1971 that North and Port played in was the Ch. 7 Rothmans Cup - played as tribute to Graham "Polly" Farmer in Perth (2 x 30 minute halves) and was completely different to the Rothmans Champions of Australia Series. In 1971 North lost to Hawthorn in the Champions of Australia final at Adelaide Oval .

Here is a summary of the Champions of Australia Series thanks to full points footy. It (full points footy) also has a summary of the Ch. 7 Cup in 1971 for those interested.

Contests which might reasonably be regarded as being for the club Championship of Australia occurred during two main phases of the game's history.

Post season matches played during the period 1888 to 1914 between the premier teams of South Australia and Victoria were consistently described in the Melbourne ('the Age') and Adelaide ('the Advertiser') press of the time as being for the championship (or premiership) of Australia. These contests did not resume after World War One.

The games of 1968-69-70-71 were described at the time as being for the 'unofficial championship of Australia', basically because the Australian National Football Council had decreed that official status could only be conferred on the championships when involvement extended to the premier teams of Western Australia and Tasmania, as it did from 1972.

Between 1972 and 1975 the premier teams of South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia, together with either the Tasmanian state champions (1972-73 and '75) or a composite team of players drawn from the premier clubs of the NTFA, NWFU and TFL (1974) contested a bona fide Australian championship series in Adelaide.
The National Football League's 1976 series involved leading clubs from the VFL (5), SANFL (4) and WAFL (3) and was, prior to the VFL's late 1980s metamorphosis from state to national competition, the closest thing to a genuine, full scale Australian club championship ever to take place.

Match Results
1968 Carlton 13 15 93 Sturt 6 20 56 Adelaide Oval
1969 Richmond 15 27 117 Sturt 9 10 64 Adelaide Oval
1970 Carlton 21 13 139 Sturt 12 22 94 Adelaide Oval
1971 Hawthorn 13 13 91 Nth Adel 10 7 67 Adelaide Oval
1972 Nth Adel 10 13 73 Carlton 10 12 72 Adelaide Oval
1973 Richmond 12 20 92 Subiaco 10 19 79 Adelaide Oval
1974 Richmond 27 11 173 Sturt 13 17 95 Football Park
1975 Nth Melb 17 15 117 Norw 5 11 41 Football Park
1976 Hawthorn 12 17 89 Nth Melb 5 11 41 Norwood Oval

In 1972 when North won - the other Premier teams were City-South (TAS) and West Perth (WA). On the Saturday North beat City-South whilst Carlton beat West Perth despite Mal Brown's attempts to bash the crap out of the Carlton players (There is some great footage of Brown throwing punch after punch at about half a dozen Carlton players in the middle of Adel Oval). Of course the final on the Sunday was arguably North's finest moment and crowned Robran as the best footballer in Australia.

There will be another to add to the list in March next year.

Subiaco are hosting North Adelaide at Leederville Oval in a preseason match.
