Funny, coz I was nervous before the first bounce.

But my old man was supremely confident. Had no doubt it was gonna be a shellacking. None whatsoever.

By half-time my 14YO know-it-all self came to the conclusion that he might not be such a dumb old fart after all...

There were 4 main reasons why I thought North were no show in 1989.

1. North were definitely a much better side in good conditions. Port could handle inclement conditions and a swirly wind much better.

2. North were coming off a six day break. Every side that came off a six day break to play in a grand final had been sadly beaten.

3. North came into the game with clearly unfit players. Steven Sims and Neil Craig had both done hamstrings in the previous final yet North's lack of depth meant that they had to play.

4. Everyone in Adelaide knew that North only had one ruckman mighty Mick Redden and the word around the traps was that he would wear one in the first 5 minutes. I don't know what happened but he had blood streaming from his eye for the whole of the game. Could have been friendly fire for all I know but North had absolutely no back up ruckmam.

I've heard that rumour too, but don't know whether it is just that, urban legend. All I know is that one of the rumoured participants had been groomsman in the other participants wedding. They never seemed to be friends after that Grand Final, even when they played together for the Crows.

Have never heard about that. Probably only A Jarman, D Hart and Tasker played together at the Crows?

Certainly did. He and Ian White went from North to South. White had more impact at South than Zoontjens. Zoontjens was very seriously injured in a car accident on the road from Victor Harbor to Port Elliot.

Nope. He started with Essendon in 1989. He played in the 87 & 88 GFs for Glenelg.

Actually, he played his first league game for Glenelg in 1984, but didn't beome a regular until 1986.

Craig Burton gave him a hiding in the 1987 GF. Burton's pace that day was astonishing. I never before or since saw him run so quickly. Michael Graham was the only player I ever saw who I would have rated as quicker than Burton on that particular day.

Zoontjens.

Favourite SANFL surname of all-time.

Neck-and-neck with 'Gary Frangalas' for favourite footy name of all-time...

Sturt's David David had even less imagination. And yes he gained fame as a cranio-facial surgeon of note after he finished his league career with Sturt
