Who coached West in late 70's? Was it Fos Williams, or did he retire around '78 when Mark and Anthony went to Port? Kerley would have been at W Torrens? Who was at North in between Patterson and Nunan?

Trevor Hughes ... Fos left at the end of '78.

Barrie Robran was the North coach '78-'80.

I thought it was a name like Hughes, but wasn't really sure. Anyone know his background? Did he play in SANFL or was he brought over form interstate?

I also thought Robran may have been coach around that period of time, but wasn't sure because i knew he played a game or 2 in 1980 and wasn't sure if he was a player coach.

It is a little known fact now that Trevor Hughes initially was a North player and in fact played in North's 1960 premiership as a rover/cum half forward flanker. He struggled in those positions for a number of years at North before going to West in about 1965. He struggled initially at West before they copped an injury to their back pocket, probably Jeff Bennets. Hughes was shifted there during the game and from then on had a great career as a back pocket. A lot of the great back pockets of the time - and there certainly were a number - similar to Hughes had previously had chequered careers in more attacking positions. Two others who imediately come to mind are Brenton Adcok, who had started as a wingman at Sturt before oving to the back pocket and becoming an all Australian and Geoff Paull who had been a rover and wingman for a number of years at North before becoming a top back pocket at North and playing in a couple of premierships. Trevor Obst also roved early in his career, but unlike the others he was a successful rover who later became a Magarey Medal winning back pocket.

George Fiacchi is probably not quite up there with Obst and Adcock but he turned into a very effective back pocket player after starting as a rover. Ross Gibbs and Stephen Curtis too, although i'm not sure if they started as midfielders or small defenders.

I think he was from Willunga originally.

Trevor Hughes was my favourite player as a very young boy. He was famous for always having his socks down in an era when that was unusual. His nickname was 'Hooker' because of his habit and ability to curve a screw punt out of bounds on the full (before it was penalised) as a defensive tactic in tight stages of games.
I can remember a game in the late 60s at Adelaide Oval when he made a couple of extremely rare forays into the forward line, while still playing back pocket, and kicked two even rarer goals. He waddled back to his position utterly exhausted.

He was indeed half of the 'Hughes & Loveday' sports store business and the man himself sold me my first pair of footy boots, which had the nailed-in studs and were called 'Trevor Hughes Long Kick'. It's only with hindsight that I can see that as some sort of joke because whatever Hughes was, a long kick he wasn't.

And yes bayman, Kuhlmann left West at the end of 1978. I can still remember my disappointment.

Perhaps not in the same company, but at Norwood Greg Nicholson was another .. Blokes like Froggy Murdoch and Wayne Schmaal couldn't get any regular league footy until filling in for injured regulars on the last line of defence and then - Obviously neither were stars like the other names mentioned, but had the positions not opened up by chance they probably would have only been 5 game players.

He actually had the nickname at North when he was purely a forward. In fact with about 90 seconds to go in the 1960 Grand Final he had a set shot for goal to seal the game for North. North led by 5 points, Hughes was 40 yards out dead in front. He hooked the shot out of bounds. Luckily the siren rang before Norwood had another chance to score although they were mounting an attack at tht time.

I have a copy of the audio of that game with Tom Warhust senior and Max Hall commentating. Even though they were both Norwood men it is an excellent, accurate broadcast.

Was the "Loveday" who co-owned the sports store a sportsperson of note aswell? Also, did Hughes and Loveday sell their store to Ebert and Weston?

I think Motley & Greer became Motley & Ebert and then Ebert & Weston. I'm not sure but I believe Hughes and Loveday may still be operating.

Bob Loveday is a great of the club. He played 260-odd games and was the leading record holder of games played for some time. He represented the state at half-back, was our leading goalkicker playing at full forward and played a lot as a ruck-rover under Fos Williams. He captained us for many years and coached us in 1972. A terrific club man who tried his heart out during some very lean years for the club.

I reckon it must have been around '78 that West changed their emblem. I can recall them being the Wolves for a few years when I was a kid. Something to do with Kerley if I recall correctly.

Yes Bob Loveday coached Payneham in SAFA and Broadview in amateur league.

JANUARY 13
Neville Roberts considers leaving his VFL club Richmond to play for West Torrens
Roberts played 50 games for Richmond and only 37 for West Torrens

ROBERTS
''Rocky"" was an absolute star player
Unfortunately he was the Shane Watson of footballers in his playing days
I reckon he got his NICKNAME Rocky from the head guards he wore after breaking his jaw ?
Roberts played a game for the VFL as well
One of the highlights for his career would have been in 1984
In 1984 I reckon he kicked 100 goals, and ended up playing in a Premiership side at Norwood
He was a favourite of mine at Norwood, his ability to take freakish marks and his accurate goalkicking the highlights
He ends up being one of the very best skilled players Ive seen don a Redleg guernsey
Imagine how even greater Roberts may have been if he was 100% fit throughout his career
