Very unlikely they would have picked a player from the Reserves competition to play for the state.

True. He was a good player though.
In a staff/student match at Woodville High he cleaned up then Westies centreman and SA state wingman Ian Gates who was on the staff at the time..

When did Ian Gates play state footy?

Purely from memory he got a wing spot at least once or twice in the era, but not the centre where he played for Westies.
I can't recall the details after so long - must have been in the period around 1958 to 1961 I think.
EPIGENETICS - Lamarck was right!

I'm pretty sure he played State Football when he was still in the seconds. I'll have to double check that. I'm certain he made the State Squad prior to 1964.

I heard this story too - hence my original question. However I can't confirm that Simunsen made a state squad/team prior to '64.

Whether he made the squad, I cannot say. All I can tell you is his first state game was against the Vics at Adelaide Oval in 1965. That was the one we won 12-11 to 3-1.

You know with what we know about individual players now even going right back to the early 1900s it would be interesting to put weightings on players and apply that to all of the SA State sides over the years up unitl 1991 (the end of true SANFL footy).
I reckon those SA sides of the early to mid 1960s would hold their own against any era - in fact the 1963 side may be the best of all time.

Any chance of you posting the '65 side AH. Be interested to see the ins & outs between 63 & 65.

ML your knowledge of SANFL footy is greater than mine but gee the early to mid 70s teams would have been great too.

Davies, Robran, Bagshaw, Cornes, Marker, Von Bertoch, Nunan, Phillis, Casey, Nelson, Burgan, Colbey...
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I think the most talented SA team I've seen is the one which LOST to Victoria by 4 points at Adelaide Oval in 1973. A half forward line of Carman, Robran, Marker makes your mouth water.

We had some great players in that era but sadly the Victorians were going through a golden era of their own ... Jesaulenko, Matthews, Hart, Bourke, Bartlett, Thompson, Knights, etc, etc.

Footy was just fantastic around that era.
