1968 Reserves Finals Series

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Thank AH for this brilliant info. My Old Man was invited to play for South in the 2's finals in '67 after spending the season at Roseworthy College as a student (compulsory to play for college back then - they had a good side there with Peter Yeo and Frederichs also in the team). He could never actually remember many of the details of these finals games - this is great.

Which one is your old man? Funnily enough I remember this game really well. Not too many Seconds matches stick in my memory but this one did for some reason. Sturt had the game on ice and then I think it was Lester Ross who kicked 2-3 quick goals to bring South level, then Hendrie marked and wobbled through a behind at the River Torrens end. Very exciting game.

I recall a lot of clubs would bring recruits into their Seconds finals teams to see what they were made of. In 1966 North brought a player down from Whyalla ... some guy named Barrie Robran.

Peter Jones is his name AH. He played FF and CHF in these games. He ended up playing approx. 60 league games for South over 3.5 seasons before being posted to Naracoorte High and Lucindale High as a teacher. Played a lot of footy in the Kowre-Naracoorte League for Lucindale and Kybybolite.

I remember Peter Jones, a tall blonde haired key forward. My records have him playing 58 games and kicking 98 goals for South from 1968 to 1972. After a good start in 1968, he didn't appear for South at all in 1969. Did he return home for a season or was he injured?

He was posted to Lucindale Area School as a Science teacher at the end of '68 season so he played for Lucindale in '69. He/they had a good year, kicked 130+ goals and the side won the Granny (they were captain coached by ? Tregenza - ex state player apparently). Over the next few years (first half of '70 he was flying up to Adelaide on Saturday mornings, but he eventually got Jack of that and played the year out for Lucindale) he was back and forth between Adelaide and the SE for teaching positions and was eventually posted to Naracoorte High in a permanent senior position so decided to stay put in the SE. Played out his footy days for both Lucindale and Kyby - Captain coaching both sides.

Thanks for that, most interesting. Makes me wonder how much better he'd have been in league footy if he'd been able to settle into it. The Tregenza you mention was probably Allan Tregenza who played for West Adelaide.
